Position Overview:
The Product Team Leader, leading Observability Engineering is a critical role in our Product Development organization. This individual leads the Observability Engineering team, acting as a thought leader, and prioritizing efforts that empower product teams to own the systems and experiences, they build. This individual continually reflects on the needs of product teams, through the lens of stability and scale, to support a rapidly growing client base.

Working closely with key roles across Product and Technology this leader will:

- Help to prioritize technical needs of the system
- Help to engineer solutions to meet needs
- Support organizational success by ensuring quality expertise is built and maintained across the organization
- Foster a culture and commitment to maturing quality across the organization
- Promote continuous improvement
- Coach and mentor junior colleagues
- Actively support and contribute to continuous integration/delivery infrastructure
- Monitor stability, identifying gaps in quality, and driving teams toward resolution
- Be a technical player-coach, working with teams to solve challenges in our HCM solution
- Seek opportunities to attend and/or present at conferences as well as write internal/external facing blogs.
During your first six months at Paylocity, you will:
- Work closely with product teams to understand their observability and monitoring needs
- Help to develop/refine strategies for monitoring/alerting to understand application health
- Lead the Observability Engineering team to prioritize efforts necessary to support product teams
- Engineer solutions to fill gaps
- Evangelize and influence the organization’s architectural vision, strategy, and principles
- Work with Technical Practice Leaders to operationalize proofs of concept and experiments aimed at improving the capabilities we provide customers
- Drive the adoption of observability patterns and practice to support a highly available customer experience
- Develop standards and frameworks in support of observability and evangelize their use throughout the organization
- Work to improve teams' ability to identify and remedy failures
- Assist teams, as needed, with measuring, monitoring, and working to drive down incidents
- Strengthen the technical acumen of the organization by sharing knowledge and interests within and outside the organization
- Drive the identification and adoption of next-generation technologies for current and future challenges
- Mentor, coach, and empower team members
- Actively contribute and participate in all Agile ceremonies, such as iteration planning, story grooming, daily stand-ups, and retrospective meetings
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, technology-related field, or equivalent experience
- Experienced in developing, documenting, communicating, enforcing policy and standards
- Working knowledge of Elk, APP Dynamics, PagerDuty, New Relic, Data Dog, Prometheus preferred
- Experienced reviewing and analyzing the effectiveness and efficiency of existing testing and develop strategies for improving
- Must be proficient in at least one coding language (preferably more than one), and have a working knowledge of modern git-based version control tools
- Experienced in providing design guidance, direction, and assistance within the application development streams for QA-related items
Soft Skills:
- You have built a highly available, distributed system and understand where it can fail
- Must be able to work effectively in an agile environment
- You have experienced those systems failing and engineered solutions to better
- Must be effective and creative in problem-solving
- You lead a team of engineers delivering observability capabilities through the lenses of availability and scale.
