Purpose:

The Scrum Master owns the delivery of the user stories on one or more engineering teams by removing impediments and following the Scrum process. The Scrum Master is a servant leader of 1-2 Scrum teams and protects them from internal and external distractions so they can successfully accomplish their sprint goals.  Works closely with the Product Owner to understand how to create and maintain the product backlog so the right work is done in the right order.  Ensures the team is following the scrum methodology and keeps the team on track, productive and growing in ability.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Organize and facilitate sprint planning, daily stand-up meetings, sprint reviews, retrospectives
  • Manage the project releases, sprints, and possible impediments. Assist in creating a release plan and help maintain the prioritized project/product backlog
  • Continually assess the Scrum maturity of the team and organization and coach the team to higher levels of maturity at a pace that is sustainable
  • Track and communicate team velocity and sprint progress to all affected teams and management.
  • Work with product owners and stakeholders to refine vision and establish goals and metrics
  • Facilitate discussions and conflict resolution in order to improve team productivity while always promoting continuous improvement
  • Ensure that the development team has been fully allocated and accounted for during the planning process.
  • Assist the team in making appropriate commitments through story selection and task definition
  • Maintain consistency within Jira and polices the proper use of the tool amongst the development team.
  • Mentor and educate the Scrum teams about practicing the core agile principles and software engineering best practices

  • Teams always has 3 sprints worth tickets refined in their backlog
  • Teams is improving velocity visualized in bi-weekly report
  • Teams reduced the average ticket cycle time IN PROGRESS to RESOLVED 
  • Teams delivers more business value driving story tickets
  • Reduced the amount of interruptions

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science 
  • First level Scrum Master certification (CSM, PSM I)
  • Experience playing the Scrum Master role for at least one year for a software development team that was diligently applying Scrum principles, practices, and theory
  • Good skills and knowledge of servant leadership, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency
  • Knowledge of numerous well documented patterns and techniques for filling in the intentional gaps left in the Scrum approach (example: numerous burn down techniques, numerous retrospective formats, handling bugs, etc.)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to adapt your communication style for the audience
  • Meet commitments, build consensus, negotiate resolutions, and garner respect from other team members.
