We’re Looking for an Staff Reporter, Express

Built In’s editorial team reaches millions of tech professionals through its reporting, which includes longform explainers, expert commentary, news coverage and guides that help readers understand and navigate the tech industry. As a staff reporter on our growing express desk, you will support that mission by researching and writing about the biggest companies operating in hundreds of tech hubs around the world. This is a fast-paced role requiring excellent organizational skills and the ability to produce engaging, error-free company descriptions while juggling a large number of assignments every day. The ideal candidate for this job is detail-oriented, self-motivated and highly adaptable, as reporters on the express desk regularly step in to take on different types of reporting assignments as needed.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Research and write upwards of 15 company descriptions daily for inclusion in articles like “Fintech Companies and Startups to Know” and “AI Companies in India.”
  • Track your work and collaborate with other members of the express desk using our internal database tools.
  • Upload completed company descriptions in our CMS and make other relevant changes to the article, as needed.
  • Periodically support the express desk’s senior associate editor on other projects.


What You Need

  • Experience producing error-free copy under tight deadlines, ideally in a newsroom environment or similar.
  • A knack for breaking down complex, nuanced concepts and making them approachable through strategic use of examples and other storytelling devices.
  • An ability to easily adopt an established brand voice and adhere to style guidelines.
  • An eye for detail, a collaborative mindset and an ability to juggle several priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience producing and publishing articles within a content management system such as Drupal, WordPress or Joomla.


Impress Us Even More

  • Experience using database tools like Airtable, Monday, Asana or similar.
  • Familiarity with SEO fundamentals.
  • Basic HTML and CSS skills.

Location & Salary

Built In currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles, which allows employees flexibility to split their time between office and home. This is a hybrid position located in Chicago, and we are prioritizing candidates who are able to be in office 3x/week.

Our base salary range for this role is targeted at $45,000-$50,000 per year. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's skills, qualifications, experience and work location. The base pay range provided is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
