Department OverviewThis unit supports the North America Government Sales team through project funding and business development activities that have a political focus. These activities include developing customer funding strategies to support procurement of large public safety communications systems as well as on-going life cycle investments in such systems. This unit also engages in legislative advocacy in support of the company’s video security and software businesses. Candidate must be able to develop and maintain high-level relationships with state and local elected officials and key staff to promote MSI government sales. This position works in close partnership with internal clients primarily in the Midwest sales territory.
Job Description

Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for developing and implementing political and funding strategies for large-scale public safety technology projects. These strategies will often involve developing and driving legislative initiatives, as well as advocating with both the executive and legislative branches of state/local government and the ability to get state or local elected leaders to prioritize these projects among other competing budget needs. This position is expected to cultivate relationships with elected leaders of both political parties. The ability to craft messaging that will resonate with elected leaders and to develop stakeholder support strategies for these projects will be critical to success in this role.

 

These projects will often involve developing and driving legislative initiatives. It is expected that this position will be responsible for outcomes that prove to be a critical success factor in closing and/or making measurable progress on sales opportunities. Examples of successful legislative initiatives involving IT procurement projects are preferred. Experience involving public safety markets and/or the tech industry are also a plus.

 

This position works in close partnership with internal clients primarily in the Midwest sales territory, including IN, IA, KS, KY, OH, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD and WI. Geographic focus within the territory will shift depending on where there are major procurement projects at any given time. This position is also responsible for working with customers to incorporate federal grants into their overall funding plans and for doing federal funding presentations to customer groups to support business development efforts.

In addition to procurement support, this position is responsible for monitoring and engaging in advocacy on legislation that could impact the company, particularly in the areas of video security and software solutions. A skill set that enables a candidate to support other types of government affairs projects as needed will be a plus.

This position requires the following knowledge/skills:

  • Ability to partner with both internal and external customers and to gain their trust

  • Ability to develop strong relationships with state/local government officials and staff

  • Knowledge of state/local appropriations and budgeting processes

  • Ability to effectively manage state/local contract lobbyists

  • Ability to effectively leverage association memberships

  • Ability to analyze legislation

  • Effective communicator, including strong writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to deal with diverse personalities

  • Critical thinking and thought leadership capability

NOTE: Candidate must reside in one of the following states with the ability to travel up to 25%+ as necessary for the position: IN, IA, KS, KY, OH, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD and WI

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelors degree and 7+ years of experience with government affairs or public policy experience
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.
