The Role: This role is responsible for the end-to-end data architecture for all of Morningstar’s Data Collection, Calculation and production platforms
Specific responsibilities include creating conceptual, logical, and physical data models and working very closely with our project managers, business analysts, data architects, ETL developers, DBAs and other data subject matter experts to understand the flow of data from sourcing through calculation and ultimately to output. This role ensures the requirements are well understood, and that the developed data models meet the specifications. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of the full life cycle of the data warehouse implementation process, from business requirements through logical modeling, physical database design, data sourcing and data transformation, data loading, and performance tuning. This position is based in our Chicago or Woburn, Massachusetts office.
Responsibilities:
Data Architecture
- Develops and maintains Morningstar’s overall data strategy for , data architecture, data models, principles and standards for the enterprise
- Responsible for the design and implementation of data storage strategies and techniques including performance, scalability, information lifecycle and security requirements.
- Drives implementation and ongoing support of metadata, master data management and data governance.
- Partners with enterprise and application architects, data modelers, and DBAs to ensure a clear and consistent technical vision is maintained.
- Ensures consistency across all applications.
- Conducts high-level design and ER diagram reviews.
- Contributes to and enforces design and quality standards.
- Oversee the design and implementation of enterprise data and metadata structures.
- Provides high-level data mapping flows.
Project Activities
- Partner with business analysts, developers, DBAs and other data subject matter experts to translate requirements into database designs and review these designs with project stakeholders.
- Design physical database objects including fact tables, dimensions, staging, materialized views, and indexes.
- Provide input for and feedback on planning, estimation, and implementation activities using the Agile methodology.
- Ability to work with multiple projects that share the same data entities and to help guide the projects on overall data design
- Provide thought leadership on data modeling best practices and provide advice and guidance around database design.
Data Governance
- Data Usage – Oversee requests from various product areas and what data they can access.
- Proactively inform product teams of newly available data and provide status of projects
- Data Security – Ensure access controls are in place, monitored, and corrected if breaches are discovered.
- Data Quality – Monitor data quality; oversee open incidents related to data quality, keep business informed of progress on data quality issue remediation.
Requirements:
- 2+ years of experience in a Data Governance role.
- 5+ years of experience in data modeling techniques with experience with one or more data modeling tools.
- Experience with Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Hive and HBase
- 5+ years of experience implementing data warehousing and business intelligence solutions, with a good understanding of a data warehousing project’s life cycle.
- Must be able to take requirements and create conceptual, logical, and physical models and work with the DBA team to implement the physical structures.
- Advanced SQL query writing and profiling is a must.
- A bachelor`s degree in computer science or related field with a specialization in relational database management systems.
- Financial or accounting industry knowledge very helpful.
- 5+ years of experience in database programming.
- 5+ years of experience with query optimization and database tuning.
- 5+ years of experience using ETL and data integration technologies is preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in architecting and oversight of Data Warehouses, Data Marts, Operational Data Stores and associated front-end technologies.
- Proven ability to effectively partner and communicate with stakeholders
- Experience leading an effective team
- Ability to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing.
