Director, Sales Engineering

The Director, Sales Engineering will manage a team of designers to engineer and operate DAS and Small Cell networks to ensure they perform to Carrier and Boingo standards.  The Director of Sales Engineering will have ownership of the architecture and design process in multiple projects, managing in-house and third-party RF network designs and testing and documenting processes.  This position requires a diversified technical skill set and a strong understanding of cellular 3G, 4G and future 5G network technologies.

The Director of Sales Engineering will support Business Development team to tackle new business challenges and deliver on premise technical presentations. This is a remote position.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect and design management of in-building AND outdoor multi-carrier wireless networks in airports, tunnels, stadiums, arenas, campuses, and other large venues, including multicarrier CDMA, GSM, UMTS, and LTE systems
  • Support and engage with the research and development of future cellular technologies as they apply to Boingo’s strategic priorities and vision.
  • Support project managers with integration and testing of in-building wireless networks and ensure documentation and monitoring of the networks are completed to internal, project-specific, and wireless Carrier standards.
  • Coordinate and deliver technical designs, design reviews, RF testing, and documentation with Carrier and venue technical personnel.
  • Design process management for assigned projects, whether internal or through third-party vendors using iBwave and other indoor/outdoor design tools
  • Assist Boingo NOC, field operations managers, and Carrier partner technical support staff to repair network related issues within the wireless networks as a third-tier support specialist. 

Requirements: 

  • 5-10+ years’ experience in wireless cellular telecommunications; and experience in other wireless technologies preferred, such as two-way trunk radio, Wi-Fi, etc.
  • Working knowledge of 3G/4G and future 5G wireless protocols (e.g., GSM, EVDO, UMTS, LTE-MIMO, LAA, high order MIMO, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of in-building wireless DAS and outdoor macro-cell site systems
  • Level-3 certification in iBwave or equivalent experience, 3-5 years’ experience working with inclines, commercial, transportation, sporting event centers, amphitheater, etc.)
  • Must pass a 10-year TSA/FBI background check (for airport security badging purposes)
  • Ability to sort and resolve complex technical problems
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform engineering computations and calculations
  • Computer proficiency with MS Windows, MS Office and related desktop and RF design software
  • Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Successful track-record of pro-actively improving work process and taking initiative
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering related field required

 Nice to haves:

  • Familiarity with cellular network test software packages such as Ericsson TEMS or similar
  • Experience with outdoor software design tools
  • Experience with DAS vendors and vendor equipment, such as Commscope, TEKO, SOLiD, TE, ADRF, Mobile Access in-building products
  • Working knowledge of software documentation packages such as AutoCAD and MS Visio
  • Experience working in public venues, such as airports, stadiums, arenas, hospitals, university campuses
  • Experience with cellular systems construction processes, and reading and understanding engineering designs documents and blueprints
