Chicago's Emmi, maker of patient engagement software, to be acquired for $170M

Patient engagement is vital to healthy recovery and hospitals are under more pressure than ever to make sure patients leave with everything they need for a full recuperation. The market is set for double-digit growth in the coming years.

Dutch software maker Wolters Kluwer is breaking into the market with a $170 million acquisition of Chicago-based Emmi Solutions. Emmi is joining Wolters Kluwer’s health division, which already offers a Clinical Solutions portfolio for healthcare systems, as part of the all-cash deal.

"Healthcare systems are striving to deliver consistent, safe, high-quality care while the economics of healthcare are increasingly demanding value in healthcare delivery,” said Wolters Kluwer Health CEO Diana Nole in a statement. “Patients who engage in their care have the potential to make better decisions and achieve improved health outcomes.”

Emmi offers an enterprise-wide multimedia patient engagement platform, which includes patients in their own care with peer-reviewed content and personalized communications. The extra care can be integrated into electronic medical records systems to ease the flow of information and improve care outcomes.

Due to changes in the regulatory environment, particularly the move toward paying providers based on an outcome instead of a procedure, making sure patients understand how to stay healthy after receiving care is vital and has led to huge market growth in the patient engagement sector.

“We are extremely excited to become part of Wolters Kluwer,” said Emmi CEO Devin Gross.  “We strongly believe it will allow us to better serve our clients by allowing us to accelerate our strategy of enabling clinicians to extend their reach and providing consistent clinical information and engagement tools across the full continuum of care.”

As part of that market growth, Emmi is expected to reach $29 million in revenue this year, according to a release from the company. More than 90 percent of that revenue is coming from subscriptions. The company currently has about 160 employees in Chicago and will stick with expansion plans in its downtown office as it continues rapid hiring.
