Without our vibrant and purposeful culture, we couldn’t truly be “August Jackson.” After all, consider our mission: “To empower the world’s most important communities.” Just as we work to inspire our clients’ most valued communities, we work equally hard to engage the August Jackson community. We strive to offer endless outlets of opportunity and inspiration for our “AJers.”
We are extremely flexible in terms of remote work with an unlimited work-from-home option, flexible work hours and trust in our employees to use these policies at their own discretion.
In an effort to foster deep connections amongst our AJ family, we emphasize the importance of culture-building activities. We have monthly “Take 5” all-company meetings, holiday parties, summer outings, community service days and special celebrations across all our offices (like an all-employee “summer camp” experience held over three days last June).
One of our favorite celebrations is our all-company retreat that we host every other year. We’ve sent our employees to places like Las Vegas or Puerto Rico to do a little work – and a LOT of bonding.
Finally, we put The August Jackson Five values at the forefront of everything we do. We empower our team members to be passionate, supportive, thoughtful, inspired and accountable. What’s more is that these values were developed by our employees through our Culture Club, a group of AJ team members whose function is to promote employee interests and plan activities.

We empower our people to make the August Jackson mission their own. On our website, each employee proudly states what our mission means to them. For example, “I Put Purpose Into Practice by… surrounding myself with people and places that ignite curiosity.” This employee buy-in takes our work as an agency to a whole new level, signifying that our positioning is a true reflection of who we are both individually and collectively.
To achieve effective management across teams, we think we’ve really mastered the art of communication. We launched Slack for internal instant messaging and, on average, 88 percent of employees actively use the platform weekly. From groups based on function to groups based on “pet pics,” we communicate like champions, thus allowing for easy check-ins and quick answers to pivotal questions. And for meetings between employees in different offices, we’ve done away with run-of-the-mill conference calls and instead use a platform called Zoom, a video conferencing service.
We strive to hire people who fit our culture and believe in our values as much as we do. And if someone is a great fit, but they work in a different office than the majority of their team members, that’s fine by us. With our team-focused environment, finessed system of communication and effective approach to cross-office collaboration, geography is no barrier. In fact, we are proud of the fact that we all feel a closeness and a deep level of trust, despite working in different cities.
We take transparency between management and employees to the next level during our monthly all-company “Take 5” meetings. For these conversations, everyone gathers together in-person (if possible) at each respective office. Then our management team presents details on key business metrics. Leaders of our various departments will also give brief presentations on projects they’re working on, simply because we want everyone at August Jackson to be completely aware of everything going on across the agency. After all, there’s always a chance for even greater collaboration when we can all brainstorm together!
We also use these meetings as yet another opportunity to strengthen our culture. We introduce new team members and share more about them (a bit about their background, a unique hobby, their favorite quote, etc.). And we make special announcements, such as when an employee welcomed a new baby or celebrated a special milestone.
We encourage our employees to inquire about training opportunities. For example, if an employee on our design team would like to strengthen their skills in motion graphics, we’re all about it! We’re committed to being a supportive and thoughtful employer and we want our employees to find new sources of inspiration so that they may remain passionate about the work they’re doing.
