About Column

For companies building financial technology and transforming the financial services space, the biggest bottleneck to their growth and innovation is often the underlying banks and infrastructure stack they rely on. We have spent our careers founding and scaling companies like Plaid, Square, Meta, Blend, and Affirm, and have seen this problem firsthand — builders and developers needing to partner with traditional banks, and creating API and abstraction layers over the patchwork that is the bank, its core, and many other vendors. All of this results in a complex (and often expensive) banking supply chain involving a user, fintech, BaaS middleware provider, bank, core and the Federal Reserve.

At Column, we set out to simplify and fix this. We are a bank and a software company built from the ground up, offering builders and developers technology-forward banking solutions that cut out the hundreds of vendors, middleware providers, and abstraction layers. This means a safer, more transparent, and less costly banking supply chain. Come build with us!

The opportunity

World-class AML compliance doesn't slow business down at Column—it makes business possible. Our AML Advisory position sits at the intersection of customer engagement, product innovation, and regulatory excellence. In this role, you will partner directly with sales and growth teams in addition to the compliance function. You will decode customer behaviors, evaluate prospect relationships, follow the money through funds flows, and examine evolving use cases in real-time and have direct exposure to regulators, novel customer types, and first-of-their-kind product flows.

This is your chance to do meaningful, complex work in an environment that actually builds things. You will shape how we think about risk, guide our due diligence practices, and influence our controls with a sharp eye on both emerging threats, industry best practices and regulatory expectations.

If you thrive on novel problem-solving, want fewer layers between you and impact, and believe financial infrastructure can both be secure and scaleable, we can’t wait to speak with you.

This position will report to the Bank’s Chief Compliance Officer. There is a strong preference for this role to be in-person in our Presidio-based office in San Francisco, however we may consider remote candidates with travel to San Francisco.

What you’ll do
  • Identify and understand the interactions between customers, products, services, and controls to ensure compliance with the Bank's risk appetite and AML Program requirements.

  • Coordinate with the AML Compliance team to develop guidance, requirements, and controls that support AML due diligence, suspicious activity monitoring, and risk mitigation.

  • Collaborate closely with sales and growth teams to understand our customers and their use of our products and services.

  • Support the Customer Due Diligence team by providing AML expertise and insights into customer prospect fund flows.

  • Own and operate the Bank's AML customer oversight processes, including governance review of key risk indicators.

What you’ll need to be successful
  • 10+ years experience working in a combination of different types of financial institutions and banks, fintechs, broker-dealers) or professional services companies (law firms, (consultancies), including experience working in a startup environment.

  • Deep understanding of AML regulations such as the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act, FinCEN, OFAC and global AML standards gained from prior experience in in two or more AML subject matter areas, including: AML Investigations/Financial Investigations Unit/AML Operations, Line of Business Advisory, Business Risk Management, Enhanced Due Diligence, Governance and Reporting.

  • Experience assessing and managing the risks of products and services such as FBO accounts, third party senders, non-bank financial institutions, and money transmission use cases including new product development, process and procedure development, and training content to support all lines of defense.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess information presented and consider potential future risks or impacts to existing processes.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to become a trusted advisor to sales and growth team; prior experience with US regulators necessary.

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools like SQL and Python preferred.

  • Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.

What you’ll get from us:
  • 🏥 Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans, including options that are 100% covered by Column for you and 100% covered for your dependents!

  • 🐣 Comprehensive family planning and fertility benefits via partnership with Carrot, including reimbursement of up to $20,000 in qualified expenses
