The Analyst I works with experienced analysts, data scientists, project managers, and healthcare professionals to transform complex healthcare data into meaningful and actionable information. DescriptionThe Analyst I position is a key contributor to cutting-edge analytic work that spans the broad spectrum of healthcare data projects at HSAG. Driven by intellectual curiosity and a passion for healthcare quality, the Analyst I position supports innovative analytic plans that are intended to provide healthcare decision and policy makers with the necessary information to transform healthcare. HSAG analysts within the Data Science & Advanced Analytics division assist in designing a wide array of analytic studies and participate in all phases of the research design process.
Analysts may work with a wide array of data to facilitate data exploration, including (but not limited to) the following data types:
- survey
- case review
- medical and prescription drug claims and encounters
- eligibility
- demographic
- clinical
- electronic health record
- registry
- vital statistics
- operational
Details regarding potential project assignments and key sources of data will be discussed with candidates during the interview process.
Essential Competencies, Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Analyst I is expected to perform the following responsibilities with appropriate guidance and oversight:
Analytical and Technical Responsibilities
- Serve as an engaged and collaborative member of HSAG’s Data Science & Advanced Analytics division.
- Develop an understanding of common healthcare data sources, structures, terminology, uses, and limitations.
- Apply established statistical, epidemiological, and analytical methods to address defined project questions under the guidance of senior staff.
- Write, test, and maintain accurate and efficient statistical programming code.
- Use SAS, Python, and other approved analytical tools to access, combine, transform, analyze, and summarize data under the direction of senior staff.
- Work with relational databases and use structured query methods to retrieve and evaluate data.
- Prepare analysis-ready datasets by cleaning, recoding, joining, aggregating, and restructuring source data.
- Conduct descriptive analyses and support the development of appropriate statistical models.
- Implement approved analysis plans, programming specifications, and data validation procedures.
- Perform quality-control reviews, including record counts, frequency reviews, reasonableness checks, reconciliation activities, and independent verification of analytical results.
- Investigate proactively unexpected findings, data anomalies, and discrepancies, and communicate concerns to senior project staff.
- Cross-reference results against source documentation, technical specifications, prior reporting periods, or independently generated outputs.
- Produce accurate tables, charts, figures, data files, summaries, and other analytical deliverables.
- Maintain clear and reproducible documentation of data sources, programming logic, assumptions, analytical methods, and quality-control activities.
- Follow applicable organizational requirements for data privacy, security, confidentiality, and appropriate use of healthcare information.
- Complete assigned analytical tasks accurately and within established project timelines.
- Manage multiple assignments by organizing work, monitoring deadlines, and communicating status to project leadership.
- Participate actively in project meetings, technical discussions, peer reviews, training sessions, and division activities.
- Collaborate effectively with other analysts, data scientists, project managers, clinicians, researchers, and other internal and external partners.
- Seek clarification when project requirements, source data, specifications, or expected outputs are unclear.
- Incorporate feedback from senior staff and demonstrate continuous improvement in technical and professional performance.
- Identify potential risks to analytical quality, schedules, or deliverables and communicate them promptly to the appropriate team member.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of standardized processes, reusable programming, documentation, and analytical tools.
- Translate analytical results into clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate findings.
- Assist in preparing technical reports, presentations, written summaries, and customer deliverables.
- Present analytical methods and findings to internal teams and, when appropriate, customers or other stakeholders.
- Explain technical information clearly to individuals with varying levels of analytical expertise.
- Demonstrate professionalism, responsiveness, dependability, and sound judgment in interactions with colleagues and customers.
- Protect confidential, proprietary, and sensitive information.
- Represent HSAG professionally and consistently in all work-related interactions.
- Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative, analytical, public health, health services research, or related discipline. Relevant disciplines may include statistics, mathematics, economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, data science, computer science, health informatics, public policy, or a closely related field.
- Completion of college-level coursework in statistics and other quantitative or analytical methods.
- Academic, internship, research, or professional experience using data to answer defined questions, evaluate patterns, or produce analytical findings.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in a quantitative, analytical, public health, or healthcare-related discipline.
- Experience working with healthcare, public health, administrative, clinical, survey, or research data.
- Experience contributing to analytical projects in an academic, government, healthcare, consulting, or research environment.
- Experience preparing analytical results for technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered, consistent with organizational requirements.
- Foundational knowledge of statistical concepts and quantitative research methods.
- Knowledge of statistical programming in at least one language or analytical environment, such as SAS, SQL, R, or Python.
- Ability and willingness to develop proficiency in SAS programming.
- Experience working with relational databases or structured datasets.
- Ability to review, clean, manipulate, analyze, and validate data.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint and data visualization concepts.
- Ability to understand and follow technical specifications, programming requirements, and analytical protocols.
- Commitment to producing accurate, validated, well-documented, and reproducible analytical work.
- Strong analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
