With direction and collaboration from the Deans and doctoral faculty, the Assistant Director of Doctoral Research will serve as a co-author and support for students to conduct and publish research. They will serve as mentors to doctoral candidates as they write their dissertations and prepare for conferences.  The Assistant Director of Research will serve as chair for three committees per cycle for a total of nine students (maximum of 12) that align with their own area of expertise and context.  This job will require flexible hours as doctoral students usually work during the day.

Mentor role:

  • Biweekly or weekly individual meetings with the student and the Advisor
  • Research labs (weekly or biweekly) with all advisees
  • Serves as chair of the dissertation committee
  • Review and assist in all IRB applications
  • Review and assist in all publication readiness
  • Review and assist in the development of professional presentations
  • Ensure professional development in areas of desired expertise
  • Monitor professional organizations, call for submission and presentation opportunities that align with student interests
  • Discipline specific mentorship in identified degree requirements 

Participation in Committees:

Each Assistant Director of Research will serve on committees as requested/needed both  within their department and across the college. 

Committee membership includes reading the dissertation drafts, attending the defense research proposal, and attending the defense.

Teaching:

Each Assistant Director of Research will teach 4 courses annually, at least 2 of which will be doctoral. (The remaining 2 courses can either be degree requirements or other departmental needs such as masters courses.)

Research and Scholarship:

Each Assistant Director of Research will be expected to engage in professional dissemination, including presentations, publications, and podcasts. This will be determined within each discipline and evaluated annually. The Assistant Director of Research will also be expected to monitor professional organizations, call for submission and presentation opportunities that align with student interests. 

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate Required

  • Prior higher education experience preferred

  • Proven publishing record

  • Published research 

  • Knowledge of a variety of research methodologies

  • Previous experience in assessing quality of writing

  • Previous experience in mentoring teacher candidates or teachers 

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a range of stakeholders

  • Familiarity with online course platforms, LMS, data systems

  • Familiarity with Google Suite including Calendar, Sheets, Docs, and Folders
