Overview

This is a hands-on architectural role, responsible for designing, building, and governing core BI solutions while ensuring architectural integrity across the enterprise BI environment. The role owns the end-to-end BI architecture, develops and maintains the multi-year BI platform roadmap, partners closely with Data Engineering and Data Architecture, and serves as the lead technical mentor for BI Developers and Analysts. In addition to strategic responsibilities, the architect actively contributes to solution design, modeling standards, governance patterns, and complex implementations, and provides day to day technical direction for two offshore development consultants.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the multi-year BI platform roadmap, including tool evaluation, platform evolution, and alignment with enterprise data strategy.
  • Translate business requirements into physical data environments that support the Enterprise Data Warehouse, including fact and dimension design using Kimball methodology.
  • Lead the design of Tabular semantic models in Power BI Premium and Microsoft Fabric, including DAX, Row Level Security, and performance optimization.
  • Define and enforce BI development standards and governance across data models, naming conventions, DAX patterns, report design, and performance thresholds.
  • Manage Power BI and Fabric capacities, including resource allocation, on premises gateway administration, and performance monitoring across Dev, Test, and Production environments.
  • Own platform compliance and audit readiness, including regular review of Power BI Activity Logs, usage metrics, and user behavior against HIPAA and enterprise security standards.
  • Author deployment plans with rollback procedures, validation criteria, dependency mapping, and approval gates. Lead postmortems and drive root cause analysis to closure.
  • Enable self-service analytics and foster a culture of data literacy across the organization through documented standards, reusable assets, and stakeholder enablement.
  • Direct the technical work of two offshore consultants, including assigning work, reviewing code and designs, and ensuring deliverables meet platform standards.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements, estimate effort, build business cases for platform investments, and communicate tradeoffs in terms non-technical audiences can act on.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years building relational dimensional data models using Kimball methodology.
  • 5+ years of hands-on Power BI development, including semantic model design, advanced DAX, and performance tuning with DAX Studio or Tabular Editor.
  • 5+ years with Power BI Datasets and SSAS Tabular, including Row Level Security and Object Level Security.
  • 5+ years working with an Enterprise Data Warehouse and writing ETL.
  • Expert level Microsoft SQL Server T SQL, including complex queries, stored procedures, and performance optimization.
  • Hands on experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Warehouse, Direct Lake, OneLake) and judgment on when to apply Import, Direct Query, or Direct Lake modes.
  • Experience with Power BI deployment pipelines, Git source control, and workspace lifecycle management across Dev, Test, and Production.
  • Experience with Azure data pipelines moving data from Data Lake to Synapse. SSIS experience for data extraction.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to produce technical and business documentation others can act on independently.
