The CMM Programmer is responsible for writing, developing, and optimizing inspection programs for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) to validate complex machined parts, thermal assemblies, and raw materials. Working closely with Quality Engineers, Machinists, and Production teams, this role ensures strict compliance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, GD&T standards, and ISO 9001 quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

CMM Programming & Setup:

  • Create, test, and maintain automated CMM inspection programs using 3D CAD models and 2D engineering prints.
  • Design, select, and assemble custom inspection holding fixtures and styli configurations for diverse component geometries.
  • Perform initial dry runs to ensure offline/online CMM programs operate safely and efficiently without probe collisions.

Dimensional Inspection & Data Analysis:

  • Execute First Article Inspections (FAI), in-process inspections, and final product layouts per customer and internal requirements.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) specifications to verify part conformance.
  • Analyze measurement data, generate non-conformance reports, and collaborate with CNC machining and engineering teams to resolve dimensional off-spec trends.

Calibration & Quality Support:

  • Maintain calibration schedules, qualification records, and proper operating conditions for CMM equipment and precision hand tools (micrometers, calipers, gage pins, height gages).
  • Support Material Review Board activities by evaluating rejected parts and determining accurate disposition data.
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives, root cause analyses and Statistical Process Control implementation across manufacturing cells.
  • Train and mentor CMM operators on daily program execution, probe calibration, and measurement best practices.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in offline/online CMM programming within an ISO 9001 manufacturing environment (thermal, aerospace, industrial equipment, or precision metal fabrication preferred).
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quality Technology, or related technical field preferred.
Technical Proficiency:
  • Advanced proficiency in major CMM software (e.g., PC-DMIS, Zeiss CALYPSO, MCOSMOS, or PolyWorks).
  • Expert knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and blueprint interpretation.
  • Strong familiarity with precision hand metrology tools (calipers, micrometers, height gages, optical comparators).

· Soft Skills & Physical Demands:

  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills to interface effectively with floor operators, quality engineers, and management.
  • Ability to lift up to 30–35 lbs as required during fixture setup and component handling.
