About Corgi

Corgi is the first full‑stack, AI‑native insurance carrier built for startups, offering modular coverages like D&O, Tech & AI E&O, Cyber, CGL, HNOA, Fiduciary, and AI Liability tailored to high‑growth, venture‑backed companies. We underwrite on our own balance sheet and use an AI‑driven platform to deliver instant quotes, adaptive coverage, and compute‑speed underwriting and claims for the modern startup ecosystem.

Role Overview

The Controller will own Corgi’s accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls across our full‑stack carrier and related entities in a highly regulated, fast‑moving environment. This is a high‑trust role that reports directly to the Head of Business and is responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of our financial information as we scale premiums, products, and geographies. You’ll work closely with the Head of Business and founders to translate Corgi’s AI‑native operations and modular product portfolio into clean, auditable financials and actionable insights.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all day‑to‑day accounting operations (GL, AP/AR, cash, payroll, fixed assets) for Corgi’s insurance, reinsurance, and service entities.

  • Own the month‑end and year‑end close, delivering accurate and timely GAAP financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) and management reporting.

  • Manage insurance‑specific accounting, including written and earned premium, unearned premium reserves, loss and LAE reserves, reinsurance (ceded and assumed), commissions, and deferred acquisition costs.

  • Support statutory and regulatory reporting for our full‑stack carrier and any captive / reinsurance structures, including state filings and regulatory exams.

  • Design, implement, and maintain robust internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures suitable for an AI‑driven, high‑growth insurance carrier.

  • Serve as the primary internal owner for external audits and tax compliance, preparing workpapers and coordinating with auditors and tax advisors.

  • Partner closely with the Head of Business on budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, providing insight into loss ratios, acquisition costs, and unit economics by product and cohort.

  • Manage cash flow forecasting, capital needs, and treasury operations, including bank relationships and any regulatory capital considerations.

  • Help evaluate and implement our ERP/accounting stack and integrations with Corgi’s AI‑native insurance platform; drive automation of data flows from underwriting, policy admin, and claims into finance.

  • Over time, build and lead a small accounting team, setting high standards for accuracy, responsiveness, and ownership.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including several years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or similar leadership role.

  • Meaningful experience in the insurance industry (carrier, MGA, reinsurer, or insurtech) with direct exposure to premiums, claims, and regulatory reporting.

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP; familiarity with statutory accounting principles (SAP) and state insurance regulatory requirements.

  • Proven track record owning the close process and producing accurate, timely financial and management reports in a complex or multi‑entity environment.

  • Hands‑on experience with modern ERP/accounting systems and strong Excel/Sheets skills; comfort working with data from modern SaaS systems and APIs.

  • Comfortable operating in an early‑stage, high‑growth environment: able to roll up sleeves, build from zero‑to‑one, and improve processes as we scale.

Nice to Have
  • Prior experience at an AI‑driven fintech/insurtech or with highly automated, data‑intensive workflows.

  • Experience with reinsurance, captive structures, or capital management for full‑stack carriers.

  • Familiarity with BI/reporting tools (Looker, Tableau, or similar) and comfort partnering with data/engineering.

  • Active CPA license a plus (or inactive in good standing with ability to reactivate).

Reporting Structure
  • Reports to: Head of Business (Corgi).

  • Works closely with: Founders, product/engineering, underwriting, and ops to align financial reporting with how Corgi’s AI‑native platform and insurance products actually run.

Compensation & Benefits
  • For this role, we expect a base salary range of 150,000–185,000 USD, plus a target bonus and equity, depending on experience and location.
