Join our team! We’re building a world where Identity belongs to you.

The Business Technology Team

Okta’s Business Technology (BT) team delivers the systems, tools, and services that power internal operations across the company. From core infrastructure to enterprise platforms, we partner across functions to drive scale, reliability, and innovation through technology.

The Data Architect Opportunity

Okta is seeking a seasoned Data Architect to join our Business Technology team. This team is tasked with building and maintaining a robust, scalable, and accessible data ecosystem that supports data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency across the organization, while adhering to stringent data governance principles. Reporting to the Senior Director, Engineering Services, this individual will serve as a critical resource for designing, developing, and governing the company's data architecture. This position’s mandate will be to define and implement data standards, create data models, oversee data integration strategies, and ensure data quality, security, and compliance with data governance policies, enabling teams across various departments, including Okta, Auth0, Business Operations, Security, and Customer Success, to leverage data effectively and responsibly. Strong preference will be given to those with a bias for action and the ability to drive significant change and maturity in data practices and governance across organizations.

What you’ll be doing

  • Act as a central point for defining and evolving the company's data architecture and strategy, with a strong focus on integrating data governance into design principles.
  • Design, develop, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models that incorporate data governance requirements such as data classification, ownership, and retention policies.
  • Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, data engineers, data analysts, data stewards, and application owners to understand data needs and translate them into architectural requirements that align with governance policies.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive data documentation, including data dictionaries, data flow diagrams, architecture blueprints, and records of data processing activities in line with governance frameworks.
  • Specifically, architect data solutions for integrating, transforming, and analyzing data from key business applications such as G-Suite, Slack, Salesforce, NetSuite, and Workday, ensuring these integrations comply with data governance and compliance requirements (e.g., data privacy regulations).
  • Measure success through a combination of quantitative (data quality metrics, data accessibility, performance, cost, compliance adherence) and qualitative (stakeholder feedback, adoption of standards) data.
  • Establish baseline metrics, track progress, and report on the efficacy and health of the data ecosystem, including its compliance with governance standards.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • 12+ years of experience in data architecture, enterprise architecture (with a strong data focus), or a similar role focused on designing and implementing complex data systems and integrating data governance principles.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience architecting solutions for integrating, managing, and utilizing data from major business applications, with specific expertise in Salesforce, NetSuite, Snowflake, Google, and Workday, including understanding their data models and APIs in the context of data governance.
  • Strong understanding of database technologies (relational, NoSQL) and data platforms (e.g., AWS Redshift, Snowflake, Vertex.ai, Varonis, Databricks), including their security and governance features.
  • Deep familiarity with data governance frameworks, data quality management, master data management (MDM), metadata management concepts, and data lineage tracking.
  • Experience implementing data security and privacy controls (e.g., role-based access control, data masking, encryption) and ensuring compliance with regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) is highly desirable.
  • Deep expertise in designing data solutions for both AI classification (including supportive data architectures) and AI agent orchestration (managing data flows, state, and knowledge for multi-agent systems).
  • Proven experience in implementing and overseeing AI governance frameworks for critical systems, demonstrating a strong ability to align diverse stakeholders (technical and non-technical) on policies and best practices.
  • Experience as a Software Architect or similar role, with the ability to understand and integrate with diverse application architectures while considering data governance implications.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships, influence across various business units and technical teams, and effectively communicate complex data and governance concepts.
