About Tovala
At Tovala, we are developing data as a core competency.
The Data Team at Tovala has invested months of effort building an enterprise data warehouse as a centralized source of truth. We are constantly engaged in the process of integrating new data sources, modeling them to represent business processes, and presenting statistically grounded insights and recommendations to our business partners. We also automate unscalable data processes, saving other teams hours of manual labor.
To date, we have been successful in these endeavors. So much so that our stakeholders have asked for our Business Analytics team to grow to several times its current size. As our team scales, we need smart, curious, and mathematically inclined individuals to help us deliver on the company's needs.
About You
At Tovala, we believe in developing data as a core technical competency. There are lots of job postings out there that don't get straight to what matters. So here's the stuff that matters to us:
- We value humility, accountability, and intelligence - in that order.
- You're results-oriented. We trust our teammates to take ownership of their work, manage their time effectively, and communicate openly about timelines, blockers, and ambiguities. Nobody checks (or cares) what hours you work - we just care that the work gets done and that you feel happy and supported doing it.
- You're adaptable and collaborative. Our team's focus will evolve as the company grows. You will work on cross-functional projects spanning the whole organization. You will collaborate with coworkers with different expertise, experiences, and mental frameworks. As our team grows, you will have the opportunity to coach junior teammates.
- You're technical. As the company scales, our processes need to scale. We intend for our analytical processes, from data management to predictive forecasts, to be both rigorous and extensible. You will be trusted to make and justify tradeoffs between scalable solutions and "good enough for now" solutions depending on the scope, impact, and urgency of the problem at hand.
- You bring your whole, authentic self to work. Give us a chance to appreciate the person behind the job title. Bonus points if your authentic self is passionate about food (cooking, eating, or philosophizing about).
Your Day to Day:
- Solve complex problems and provide answers supported by data and statistical analysis.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to scope and plan analytics projects.
- Present analytical insights and their impact to business stakeholders.
- Identify and support claims to causal links between events and observations within the data.
- Build predictive models, re-engineer unscalable processes, and support strategic initiatives.
- Help enforce best practices for data modeling and visualization.
- Provide transparency through effective documentation.
- Challenge institutional intuition. There are a lot of things we "know" from anecdotal evidence. Use data to confirm or deny widely held beliefs across the organization.
Requirements
- B.A. or higher degree in a STEM field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 1-2 years experience making business recommendations based on statistical analysis
- High level of proficiency with SQL (we write and debug our own ETL)
- Proficiency with programmatic stats packages (pandas, R, Julia, etc.)
- Proficiency with Looker (or similar BI tool)
- Familiarity with Excel (some processes still live in spreadsheets; #startuplife)
- Experience using version-control (git, bitbucket, etc.)
