Data Developer
Home Chef is building new ways to navigate the booming meal kit delivery industry. Our team is a unique mix of creators, chefs, entrepreneurs, and trailblazers and we’re growing quickly. Our customer-first mentality, combined with a zest for supporting our peers, helped us bring home Built in Chicago’s Startup of the Year Moxie award in 2017. If you’re ready to be part of the action, we’re ready to connect with you. There are no limits to where we can go together.
The real question is what you want to be learning. At Homechef you'll learn a bunch of rubber-meets-the-road lessons around data modeling, implementation of theory vs reality etc. Day to day you'd be looking at 30% whiteboard/meeting to figure out what people are actually trying to do, 30% doing you're own planning/spiking out and 40% coding. "Data Developer" is the best title I've got, way more technical than an "analyst" but less infrastructure than an "engineer". Basically we have a data platform built, but it needs content fleshed out. We're training our extremely non-technical analysts right now in the basics of transformations, modeling theory, and sql but we're also just writing the data transformations ourselves. The role has plenty of room to grow towards infrastructure, machine learning, teaching, leadership or all four but right now we're a mid-sized startup with a preference for practical over theoretical. If you're interested let me know and I can schedule a phone screen this week. Also happy to answer questions about your other offers etc!
Won’t own all etl. If interested can touch infra.

Introduction From the Data Team at Home Chef:We hate most job reqs. They use general terms like ”highly driven”. They list qualifications the role doesn’t call for. They use buzzwords that mean nothing. They provide no context around the role and why it’s open.
We’re hoping to stay away from that nonsense. Here’s our job posting in the clearest words we could think of:
Context - What Data at Home Chef doesTl;dr - define, build, and own the enterprise data model, help business analysts and stakeholders derive value from data, contribute to building scalable data infrastructure.
The Data Platform is equal parts infrastructure and data modeling logic. In this context, “data modeling” refers to the conceptual and programmatic work that goes into building a data warehouse. We’re responsible for working with data consumers across the company to design and build a data warehouse that accurately reflects their needs and query patterns.
That’s where you come in…
Responsibilities - Your Day to Day
- Design, build, and own a clear concise Data Model
- Convert non-technical business requests to technical specs and those specs to code
- Build ingestion, cleaning, and transformations jobs to create a useful integrated data warehouse
- Work closely with business stakeholders to learn about the business, gather requirements, define projects, and communicate progress
- Contribute to Home Chef’s standard library of data munging tools and programs
- Teach non-technical colleagues how to interact with the data platform; help them become self-sufficient
- Advocate for the role of data across the company, we don’t wait for projects to come to us, we seek them out
Requirements
- The ability to Google a new concept and explain it to a five year old an hour later
Relevant Skills
- SQL
- Python / PySpark (our code base is almost entirely in Python)
- Proficiency with AWS Suite (s3, EMR, EC2, VPC, AWS Glue, etc.)
- Experience building enterprise level data models
- Strong communication (with both highly technical and non-technical colleagues)
- If you know Spark & Python, that'll do. If you don't know Spark, but know SQL, that'll do. If you're familiar with Python Pandas, just switch up some syntax and throw in a few more compute nodes, you've got PySpark!
Growth Opportunities
- Experience working on a modern Data Platform (Apache Spark, Hive, Airflow scheduler, distributed compute, AWS Suite, etc.)
- Training on intermediate and advanced Data Modeling concepts
- Experience communicating with non-technical stakeholders, determining relative ROI of projects, and building and implementing your own project plans
- Learn-by-doing exposure to tools, concepts, and technologies in the data realm
- Independence - define and implement your own career progression. There are many hats that need wearing in the Home Chef data realm, find one (or many) you like and put it on!
