Position Purpose 

Reporting to the Director of IT, this senior position exercises independent judgment, and strategic leadership to oversee the planning and operation of the group charged with provisioning, supporting, and implementing data production and reporting systems for Echo. 

Principal Accountability | Data Platform (Operations and Engineering) Management

  • Responsible for a team of database professionals, related processes, and overall team performance and direction
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through an agile, continuous delivery process
  • Responsible for the health, uptime, performance, and recoverability of database systems
  • Oversee the day to day operations and support of key database systems
  • Advise and assist software engineering teams in data stewardship
  • Proactively drive improvements to the performance, stability and supportability of database systems
  • Partner across technical platform ownership to define and drive data management strategy, including the evaluation of database technologies, cloud alternatives, and disaster recovery strategy
  • Support non-production environments in support of other teams, creating novel and efficient ways to provide sample datasets
  • Foster data governance and standards across the organization
  • Must be proficient with RDBMS concepts
  • Partner with key IT and business stakeholders to provide operational support to meet current and future business needs related to data lifecycle and business intelligence
  • Oversee problem identification and resolution process for data services and systems
  • Establish performance and operational metrics to continuously monitor and improve data operations 

Principal Accountability | Team Management

  • Remove impediments to team progress, including escalation management
  • Exhibit sound professional judgment in managing team priorities and conflict resolution
  • Coach team members on cross functional team collaboration
  • Manage and maintain team backlog and priorities
  • Translate strategic goals of the department into executable direction for the team
  • Enable close cooperation within the team and across the organization
  • Schedule and deliver improvements/changes from multiple, disparate teams by building relationships with key members of each team
  • Monitor team progress and health through daily stand-up meetings, retrospectives and monthly prioritization
  • Ensure necessary follow ups with team members are promptly communicated
  • Bring clarity to complex issues through organized communication

Principal Accountability | People Management

  • Understand and plan career paths that are unique to individuals yet aligned to the business
  • Ensure individuals are getting necessary training and are continuously improving
  • Set expectations on individual roles within a team and the organization
  • Manage team schedule allowing for time off, work from home and other entitlements
  • Set team member performance and work goals, conduct performance reviews
  • Monitor and provide frequent feedback regarding individual performance via weekly one on one meetings with direct reports
  • Foster Echo core values and goals among team members
  • Ensure maximum team retention

Desirable Skill | IT Change Management and Compliance

  • Weigh in on Release Readiness reviews, Milestone Reviews, and Business Go/No-Go reviews
  • Manage relationships and coordinate work between teams involved in changes
  • Manage risks and resolve issues that affect release scope, schedule and quality
  • Collaborate with Service Desk Management on establishing a one-voice communication path to Echo stakeholders, including shared escalation procedures and definition of an emergency release
  • Operate at an advisory level, consistently interacting with IT and line-of-business management.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in MIS, MBA or equivalent years of experience
  • Scrum or Lean Certification (CSM, CSPO, Lean/Six Sigma) highly regarded
  • 5+ years of experience working on software development projects as a Software Engineer, QA Analyst, Product Manager, Scrum Master or similar
  • 2+ years contributing on an Agile team
  • 5+ years technical leadership experience
  • 2+ years managing people
  • Proven track record (5+ years) of working in a fast paced, time-sensitive projects that require:
    • Clear and timely communication of key information deemed critical to project success
    • Managing software risk
    • Balancing priorities
    • Going above and beyond the requirement of the role
    • Mentoring team members
    • Articulating technical information to a non-technical audience
    • Leading without authority
  • Good understanding of any commercial-grade database systems. Microsoft SQL Server experience highly regarded.
  • Experience developing solutions or contributing to development leveraging:
    • Object-Oriented programming techniques (.Net)
    • Software Development Lifecycles
    • Unit Test Techniques
    • Debugging/Analytical Techniques
