Database SRE Team Lead
As the Database SRE Team Lead, you’ll have the unique opportunity to set the direction for database infrastructure management at HRT. You’ll have a significant impact on a crucial part of our existing and growing infrastructure that is critical to our success and ability to conduct large scale research and trading across the world. We’re looking for someone who is excited about taking ownership of improving the existing database infrastructure, designing the future of databases at HRT, and building a team to support their vision.
This role sits within the Systems Team, which is responsible for building and maintaining the computers, networks, data storage, operating systems, and software that allow our trading strategies and research environment to run worldwide 24/7. A typical day could include setting the direction for how we use classic DBs (SQL server, mariaDB, postgresSQL), data lake technologies (Trino, Kafka), or driving the set up of a new system like Pinot, Druid, or Dremio.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain HRT’s database infrastructure across multiple database types and use cases, from globally distributed trading infrastructure to large-scale research.
- Install, configure, and scale databases and big data analytics solutions for large-scale research
- Investigate and improve performance of queries and supporting infrastructure (Debian and Windows)
- Build proofs of concept to test out new solutions
- Scale a team to improve database management company-wide
Profile
- A degree in computer science or a related technical field
- 5+ years of experience working in database management and infrastructure engineering
- Proven ability to lead significant technical projects and/or teams while staying deeply involved with the technology itself
- Familiarity with state-of-the-art DB technologies and tradeoffs: distributed DBs, time-series DBs, relaxed consistency models, columnar storage
- Knowledge and experience with Linux, must be comfortable using Linux/UNIX command line tools
- Interest in diving into performance investigations throughout the tech stack, from hardware issues to the application level
- Experience with at least one of: MySQL, Postgres, Yugabyte, SQL Server, CockroachDB, Trino, or Kafka
- Solid scripting, performance troubleshooting, and networking knowledge
- Exceptional communication skills - this role will require cross-collaboration with various stakeholders across HRT
