Director, Data Engineering

What will your day look like?
You will lead Alliant’s Data Engineering team and will be responsible for creating the vision and strategy to transform Alliant’s data and analytics capabilities. The Director will have oversight of data and BI engineers, data analysts, and advanced analytics engineers that develop, manage and support the entire data landscape for Alliant. The Director is responsible for leading Alliant’s data journey from traditional on-prem data technologies to a modern cloud-based platform. In addition, the Director is responsible for ensuring that the Data Engineering team is delivering the data needs to the organization via our data warehouse, data lake and suite of reporting, dashboard and analytics tools. The incumbent will work cross-functionally throughout the organization and will build and maintain working relationships with team members, vendors, stakeholders and other internal business partners to ensure Alliant’s strategy and goals are being met through robust data solutions. General direction is received from the Vice President, Technology Strategy and Transformation.
Responsibilities

- Develop and drive the overall strategy and vision for data and analytics at Alliant
- Partner with senior business executives and other key stakeholders to help them achieve goals through the appropriate data architecture, tools and processes
- Collaborate with reporting and analytics teams to define Alliant’s data roadmap and architectural designs to improve our data platform scalability
- Lead the Data Engineering team to build and manage data environments, integration platforms, data mining, data visualization and predictive analytics
- Evaluate and on-board cloud technologies for data collection, data analysis, and data reporting
- Provide strategic guidance and insight on data engineering, including industry trends and opportunities
- Develop Alliant’s data roadmap and lead the teams and organization through the implementation of the data roadmap
- Establish budgets, operational plans and performance requirements for the Data Engineering department
- Ensure compliance with data security measures and controls as established by the Chief Information Security Officer
- Build relationships across the company including knowledge of cross-functional teams' objectives and initiatives in order to understand opportunities, and execute data engineering and analytics roadmap
- Accountable for delivery of all projects and programs relating to Data Engineering
- Responsible for reliability, uptime and business delivery of data management and reporting tools
- Maintain regular communication and interaction with technology team members and all business partners
- Promote cooperation, negotiation and communication among and within teams; provide consulting services for team members and business partners during the planning, design, implementation and testing of initiatives, upgrades and/or changes
- Deliver superior results through quality execution and best practice adaptation

- Provide a structural and consistent approach to ensure that individual development plans are in place, performance management is consistent, performance management process is respected and followed, and coaching and feedback are provided on a regular and dynamic basis.
- Work with your direct reports and help seek out growth opportunities for your reports; continually challenge reports to maximize their engagement and productivity
- Help propagate messaging across the organization that fosters a broader knowledge of Technology, promotes collaboration and influences constructive and positive change
Qualifications
What makes you a great fit?
You’ll be a great fit if in addition to the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in either Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems or a related field, required; Master’s degree preferred, and you have:
- 10+ years’ relevant experience in data engineering, required
- 5+ years’ leadership experience and demonstrated ability to lead and develop a highly effective team, required
- Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud data platform (Synapse, Databricks, Data Factory, Data Lake Analytics, etc.), required
- Experience with data modeling, integration, data warehousing, un-structured data (data lakes), required
- Experience with data visualization and dashboarding tools (ex: SAP Business Objects, Tableau, PowerBI), required
- Experience with data science and advanced analytics toolsets (ex: RapidMiner, Microsoft R), required
- Experience with data engineering and analytics in banking, credit unions, or financial services industries, preferred
- Ability to think creatively to identify ways to improve team success
- Strong hands-on capability and spirit of leading by example
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with employees at all levels within the organization
- Ability to influence without authority
- Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skills and the ability to build robust cross-functional relationships
- Demonstrated critical thinking and decision-making skills
- Ability to successfully adjust to changing needs in a fast paced, dynamic environment

- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Products: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
