So, what’s the role?

As the Data Engineering Leader at Kin, you will lead the data tools and engineering organization. You will be responsible for scoping out, designing and building infrastructure across multiple data domains. You will be making key technical decisions, specifically taking into account trade-offs between short- and long-term data analysis and business objectives. You will lead projects and teams as we build and rethink data and business intelligence for the home insurance industry. As the leader of the data team, we’ll rely on you to build an impactful technical team through hiring, coaching, and mentoring. You’ll work with all areas of the business and leadership to gather insights, influence product road maps, and help us achieve our technical goals.

A day in the life could include: 

  • Building and leading a technical team of software and data engineers
  • Contributing to the prioritization of data and analytic initiatives in the organization
  • Architecting, designing and facilitating execution with the team, and bringing engineering solutions to reality with a data mindset
  • Making key decisions on data transformation and outcomes
  • Thriving in an immutable infrastructure and git-ops driven environment
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders in multiple technical disciplines: including developers, business intelligence, data engineers, devops, quality assurance, and architects to support existing and implement new data, and predictive analytics solutions
  • Serving as a technical advisor to management concerning the planning, development, design, procurement, maintenance and implementation of data integration for enterprise-level systems
  • Monitoring and evaluating audit and compliance industry trends and third-party tools

I’ve got the skills… but do I have the necessary ones?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field or equivalent professional or military experience
  • 8+ years of experience of IT platform implementation in a technical role
  • 8+ years of development and/or DBA experience in Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) or Data Warehousing (eg. Redshift)
  • 5+ years people management experience, leading teams with various technical abilities
  • 3+ years leading technical teams. Strong mentorship and leadership skills, able to mentor engineers at different stages of their career
  • Experience with prioritization of projects that mitigate trade-offs
  • Experience designing database environments, analyzing production deployments, and making recommendations to optimize performance
  • Experience with ETL pipelines and BI integrations such as Looker, Airflow, PDT, etc
  • 2+ years experience with high availability, concurrent distributed infrastructures
  • Experience and understanding of immutable-infrastructure with Terraform, git-ops, automation, CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with monitoring tools like Cloudwatch, DataDog, etc
  • Previous work experience at an organization that develops web-based application software
  • Demonstrated project management skills & solid attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills, and able to convey technical concepts to individuals with varying levels of technical understanding across teams
  • Ability to organize time and project work efficiently
  • Comfortable in a startup environment or working with ambiguity

Located in the historic Merchandise Mart Plaza, Kin's office is located directly off the Brown and Purple line stops, overlooking the Chicago River.
