Position Overview

The Database Administration Engineer is an existing role within Kimball Electronics Shared Services.  This position is responsible for leading the enterprise database strategy and serving as the centralized technical resource for database systems, while also providing advanced administration, support, and troubleshooting for the current environment. This role is located at Kimball Electronics headquarters in Jasper, IN and reports to the IT Data Integration Manager.  This role will work closely with IT representatives spanning multiple business units and departments across the organization. Kimball Electronics has an international footprint, so this role requires the ability to work with different languages and cultures. 

Quick Summary

The Database Administration Engineer leads the direction, standards, and modernization of Kimball’s database ecosystem, balancing strategic planning with hands-on technical leadership. This includes research and development of database solutions, defining and driving enterprise standards, guiding upgrades and migrations, architecting backup and recovery strategies, establishing security and audit approaches, and proactively optimizing performance and capacity. In addition to strategy leadership, this role supports all responsibilities performed by the Database Administrator, including monitoring, maintenance, installations, upgrades, access management, troubleshooting, documentation, and global operational support. The Database Administration Engineer provides leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance, ensuring the database environment is stable, secure, scalable, and aligned with business needs. The role requires an off hours support rotation along with the Database Administrator.  To be successful, the candidate must be self-motivated with the ability to think with an enterprise mindset to do what is best for Kimball.

Key Performance Objectives

Short Term: (0 to 9 months)

  • Learn KEI Guiding Principles and cultural attributes
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape, standards, and policies at KEI
  • Assume the role of centralized technical resource for database systems, providing advanced support and troubleshooting
  • Support the Disaster Recovery process to recover the data center priority 1 SQL Server Instances
  • Define an initial 12–24 month database strategy roadmap focused on standardization, security, monitoring, and documentation improvements
  • Lead assessment of database security, risk, and audit posture; identify and prioritize improvement actions. 
  • Support and guide day-to-day DBA activities including installations, upgrades, access requests, and global support needs

Midterm: (9 to 24 months)

  • Create, publish, and drive adoption of enterprise database standards to ensure consistency and long-term supportability
  • Lead research and evaluation of database platforms and cloud solutions; provide strategic recommendations
  • Develop and lead migration and upgrade plans for database platforms, releases, and fixes. 
  • Lead and assist performance optimization efforts including tuning, memory management, and consolidation initiatives
  • Enhance proactive monitoring, alerting, and operational documentation to improve reliability and on-call effectiveness
  • Mentor and develop database administration talent through knowledge sharing, training, and documentation

Longer Term:

  • Evolve and maintain a multi-year database strategy aligned with business growth, security, and disaster recovery requirements
  • Establish mature governance for database standards, security controls, backup validation, and audit readiness
  • Maintain strong vendor knowledge and oversee database licensing compliance and long-term planning. 
  • Build scalable team capability through structured training, mentoring, and standardized operational playbooks
  • Proactively consult with business units to enable new capabilities, tools, and improved database support

The typical pay range for this role is:  $65000 - $90000

the actual wages offered will vary based on multiple factors, including experience, education, geography, and other relevant factors
