This is a fully remote role for candidates who are based outside of the New York Metropolitan area. For those located in the area, we encourage you to consider our hybrid work arrangement (1-2 days a week in our NYC office). At Convergent Energy and Power, our mission is to make the electrical grid cleaner, more reliable, and less expensive by leveraging state-of-the-art energy storage and distributed generation technologies.

The Director, Business Development is responsible for leading the advanced sales cycle, converting qualified opportunities into closed deals by building strong client relationships, understanding customer needs, and crafting winning solutions. This role collaborates cross-functionally to develop proposals, negotiate deals, and present opportunities to senior leadership. Beyond early-stage development, this role drives the commercial advancement of projects throughout the development lifecycle, coordinating across technical and legal teams to ensure alignment, mitigate risk, and deliver successful outcomes.

This is an individual contributor role and therefore does not have any direct reports but will exercise informal mentorship and guidance to junior level staff.

What You’ll Do

Sales and Deal Conversion (70%)

o   Lead the advanced sales cycle by converting qualified opportunities into closed deals. This requires quickly building rapport with prospective customers, understanding a customer’s pain points and implied needs, and crafting a winning solution for the customer and Convergent.

o   Work across the organization to leverage the skills, resources, and expertise required to evaluate opportunities and develop compelling proposals.

o   Support our current deal pipeline by helping to negotiate and close deals in advanced stages. Present deals to senior management and prepare materials for review by our investment committee. Partner with Pre-Construction and Legal teams to advance projects from Booked Deal through Development Complete, ensuring commercial alignment, mitigating risk, and driving client urgency to achieve key development milestones.

o   Maintain strict adherence to internal processes by taking ownership of our CRM system and other internal tracking systems, with a strong emphasis on keeping everything up to date.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Proposal Development (30%)

o   Work across the organization to leverage the skills, resources, and expertise required to evaluate opportunities and design compelling proposals.

o   Regularly coordinate with remote teams to ensure alignment and foster collaboration across the organization.


Requirements

Required Qualifications

o   Bachelor’s Degree.

o   Have 8+ years of experience successfully originating and closing complex deals with large electricity consumers and/or utilities.

o   Ability to proactively manage each step of the sales cycle, from lead identification and cold calling to negotiating a definitive contract.

o   Ability to manage customers and move towards a quick close through. Timely and succinct communication, robust meeting preparation, creating urgency in deals, and finding solutions to complex problems quickly.

o   Know how to manage a complex sale and lead multiple deals at different stages.

o   Have a thorough understanding of how electricity market participants are exposed to various system costs.

o   Have a strong understanding of distributed generation, commercial and industrial electrical systems, or engineering concepts related to industrial processes.

o   A strong business acumen with the ability to navigate a wide variety of functional areas including the C-suite, pre-construction, operations, procurement, and marketing.

o   Be organized and numerate.

o   Excellent communication skills and the ability to put together a cohesive narrative in PowerPoint as well as in written documents.

o   Strong analytical skills with the ability to dive into models to fully grasp our value proposition and come up with creative solutions for non-standard deals.

o   Proactive in finding creative and unique solutions for Convergent and customers.

o   Ability to work under general autonomy; handle problems and deviations with accepted practices and support from manager.

o   Ability to work in team environment and provide guidance to less experienced team members.

o   Ability to maintain an executive presence.

o   Ability to work with cross-functional teams to get customer deliverables.

o   Alignment with Convergent’s mission, values and a strong interest in the Clean Energy Transition.

o   25% travel expected, for conferences, on-site customer engagements, for team events and company-wide meetings.


Preferred Qualifications

o   Understanding of electricity markets, project interconnection procedures, single-line diagrams, basic electrical laws, and standard nomenclature for electrical generating equipment.

o   Experience using HubSpot.

o   Technical sales experience.

Base Salary Range: $130,000-$145,000 per year + Uncapped Commission; Salary Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience.
