Baylor Genetics is seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to accelerate future growth within the Bioinformatics R&D and Data Science organization. The Director, Genomics Data will serve as a technical and people leader, driving the innovation in genomics data analysis, data platform architecture design, data commercialization, and enterprise data ETL and storage.  

The successful candidate will lead a group of Sr. Data Engineers and Bioinformatics data scientists to integrate genomics, clinical, and business information into a cohesive data ecosystem, advancing genomic insights discovery, knowledge management, data analytics, and data product development.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:
    • Master's or higher degree (PhD preferred) in Genomic Data Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related quantitative field.
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years of experience in technical and people management role overseeing multiple genomic data-oriented functions.
    • 10+ years of professional experience in genomics data science, computational genomics, bioinformatics, and ML/AI applications.
    • Proven expertise in enterprise level data platform architecture, design, development, and deployment.
    • Proven expertise in data analysis, management and storage for clinical genomics applications, especially for new generation sequencing and clinical data.
    • Proven expertise and hands-on experience in cloud service (Azure, AWS, GCP), data Lakehouse (Databricks, Snowflakes), and precision health platform (DNAnexus, Velsera).
    • Hands-on experience in clinical genetic testing workflow and human genetic data analysis.
    • Hands-on experience in big data, data ETL, data visualization, workflow orchestration/logging, and databases (including SQL and no-SQL).
    • Experience in ML/AI/GenAI under genetic testing and precision health settings.
    • Experience in software development life cycle.
    • Experience in software programming, version control (Git), and CI/CD best practices.
    • Experience in statistical modeling and programming (R, Python).
    • Familiarity with CLIA certification, HIPAA and GDPR compliance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leadership:
    • Provide strategic direction and vision for genomics data research and development aligned with the organization's goals.
    • Lead the planning, implementation, and execution of genomics data R&D initiatives.
    • Manage and mentor a team of bioinformatics scientists and data engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence.
    • Oversee recruitment, training, and development of team members.
  • Research & Development:
    • Serve as the SME in genomics data science and data platform development.
    • Leverage existing corporate data to identify new opportunities and develop scalable systems to support business growth.
    • Advance genomics data R&D with emerging technologies, such as LLM and GenAI, to strengthen company’s market leadership.
    • Drive the design and development of novel methods and analytical tools for genomic data analysis and management.
    • Direct R&D efforts to improve existing data platforms and develop new solutions and products.
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborate cross-functionally with other teams/departments to integrate genomics data and analytical platforms into broader precision diagnostics workflow.
    • Foster partnerships and collaborations with external entities to advance R&D efforts.
    • Hands-on support on genomics data analysis and data platform development when needed.
  • Quality Assurance:
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and compliance with regulatory requirements in genomics data R&D activities.
  • Implement rigorous validation and verification processes for developed tools and workflows.
