Energy Storage Commercial Tax Director - Department Head
Locations: FULLY REMOTE (Anywher in the USA)

This is an opportunity to join an industry leading renewable energy venture with strong private equity backing that is focused on the development, execution, and operations of dynamic utility-scale energy storage projects. They are at the forefront of the industry, have accumulated over 9GW+ nationwide portfolio of projects that include a utility-scale fleet of grid-connected operating standalone battery storage assets.

The Energy Storage Commercial Tax Director is a departmental leadership role that will be tasked with managing internal/external tax functions and building out a holistic internal tax function for the organization. Extensive tax expertise, with a strong focus on utility-scale renewable energy incentives, structuring, and regulatory compliance is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Renewables Tax Director - Big-picture tax strategist: Drive tax planning across the full project lifecycle—development, construction, and operations. Advise on the tax impact of M&A, restructurings, and other major business moves.
  • Renewables Tax Director - Incentives expert: Maximize value from federal and state incentives like the ITC. Partner with the Project Finance team to structure tax-efficient deals, including tax equity partnerships and hybrid transfer arrangements.
  • Renewables Tax Director - Compliance lead: Oversee tax return filings across multiple entities and jurisdictions. Manage GAAP tax provisions and reporting requirements, especially for complex partnership structures.
  • Renewables Tax Director - Process pro: Maintain internal controls and procedures to keep tax processes clean, timely, and audit-ready. Ensure all compliance boxes are checked for tax equity deals and reporting obligations.
  • Renewables Tax Director - Team builder & connector: Lead and grow a high-performing tax team. Work closely with Finance, Legal, Commercial, Development, and EPC teams to align tax strategy with broader business goals.
  • Renewables Tax Director - External relations manager: Own relationships with tax advisors, auditors, and investors. Present tax risks, strategies, and outcomes to executive leadership and the board.
  • Renewables Tax Director - Risk watchdog: Stay ahead of tax law changes that affect renewables. Lead tax due diligence for acquisitions/divestitures, manage audits, and proactively identify and mitigate tax-related risks.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Credentials & Education: CPA required, with a bachelor’s in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A Master’s in Taxation or JD/LLM is a strong plus.
  • Tax Depth & Sector Focus: 10+ years of tax experience with significant time spent in the renewable energy space. Deep knowledge of renewable tax incentives, project finance structures, and partnership/tax equity arrangements.
  • Compliance & Technical Strength: Strong command of federal and state tax rules, reporting, and compliance. Bonus points for experience with international tax planning.
  • Leadership & Strategy: Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams and oversee complex, cross-functional tax projects. Brings a sharp mix of business acumen, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Industry & Firm Background: Big 4 public accounting experience preferred, especially paired with a background in Renewables or Power & Utilities.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Skilled at presenting nuanced tax issues to both technical and non-technical audiences. Comfortable working with dispersed teams across legal, finance, and commercial functions.
  • Tools & Tech: Confident in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
