Description of Work

The Roadway Design Unit is comprised of a diverse team whose primary purposes are to produce and review roadway design plans, lighting and electrical plans, and provide technical expertise on these subjects to internal and external partners.
We are looking for an Engineer III who will serve on the Design Development and Support Group.
In this role you will:
•Serve as an advanced level and senior design engineer on the Design Development and Support Group.
•Use CADD software to develop roadway design plans and construction estimates throughout the project delivery process using current design principles and practices.
•Assist the team lead with creating the scope of work and develop and negotiate workday estimates for engineering contracts.
•Perform quality control and quality assurance of roadway designs to ensure conformance to NCDOT standards and specifications.
•Participate in Status Meetings, as a technical expert, and provide guidance regarding the designs produced by Private Engineering Firms and internal and external stakeholders to ensure NCDOT Standards and Policies are followed.
•Communicate with other technical leads and Divisions, as needed, for internal design projects, to progress roadway design plans.
•Support the team lead by directing the work of Engineer I’s and Engineer II’s to ensure project schedules are met and provide training and development.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC20 $70,478 - $123,336     

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience utilizing current civil engineering principles and practices and ensuring compliance of roadway design plans and details with AASHTO guidance, Roadway Design Manual, and NCDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications.
  • Experience making final decisions and recommendations, independently, for complex projects involving roadway design plans and construction estimates, in all stages of project development.
  • Experience utilizing CADD design software platforms such as Microstation, Geopak, Corridor Modeling and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) in the development and review of roadway design plans. 
  • Experience communicating technical information effectively, orally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner to varied audiences.
  • Experience directing the work and training of lower-level engineers.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
