So, what’s the role?

As an Engineering Director at Kin, you will lead multiple teams as we build and rethink software and technology for the home insurance industry.  As a leader, we’ll rely on you to build and deliver high performing technical teams through hiring, coaching, and mentoring.  We value collaboration, and with our distributed ecosystem, your communication skills will be put to good use.

A day in the life could include: 

  • Lead a distributed engineering team(s) and serve as the head of engineering for your product.
  • Hire, nurture and mentor top engineering talent. Create a team to be proud of!
  • Understand the business working closely with our insurance team, product management, customer service and support to help inform engineering roadmaps, priorities and be responsive to customer needs.
  • Enable your team to innovate and deliver roadmap features with agility and high quality
  • Consistently, rapidly, and effectively take ideas from concept to production and drive delivery excellence.
  • Be a steward of the platform. Own code quality, availability, scalability, resiliency, performance, observability and maintainability as part of ongoing development.
  • Support operations and SRE teams in backstopping production issues and incidents. As a steward of the platform, push for root cause analysis and resolutions.
  • Work closely with senior engineers to make platform improvements that give us greater flexibility, business agility and platform reliability.

I’ve got the skills… but do I have the necessary ones?

  • Has grown up with an engineering background. Has been a developer, architect and worked hands on in their career.
  • Deep understanding of cultivating teams, motivating people and creating high performance cultures.
  • Knowledge of the Insurance Industry & Products is a big plus.
  • Overall 12+ years of experience in software development & strong computer science fundamentals with 5+ years managing a team of 25+ software engineers
  • Strong design and architecture exposure in building large scale enterprise SaaS solutions using cloud technologies.
  • Experience in designing, implementing and maintaining high performance, high availability, large-scale web/mobile based software applications using modern programming languages
  • Knowledge of popular JS frameworks and libraries (React, Angular, Vue, etc.) is nice to have.
  • Experience with Relational and No-SQL databases, message queues/brokers
  • Exposure to BI & big data technologies including Looker, BigTable.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to grasp and convey complex product requirements or technical concepts
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, iterative development environment
  • Excellent command of software development life cycle activities including analysis, design, development, unit and system testing, production deployment and post-production support
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work on concurrent streams with different priorities
  • Location in Central or Eastern time zones (CST & EST) strongly preferred

Located in the historic Merchandise Mart Plaza, Kin's office is located directly off the Brown and Purple line stops, overlooking the Chicago River.
