Job Summary:
The GIS Product Manager owns an assigned product or system area from discovery through delivery, adoption, and outcome realization. The role is accountable for product outcomes within the strategic direction, capacity, and architecture boundaries established by GIS Leadership. It turns the needs of Sales, Customer Success, Finance, and other internal teams into clearly defined problems, measurable product goals, initiative recommendations, and an ordered, delivery-ready backlog. The GIS Product Manager determines day-to-day product and delivery priorities within the approved direction and recommends future roadmap investments to the GIS Product Lead, GIS Leadership, and applicable business leadership.
What You’ll Do:
Owns the full lifecycle of an assigned product or system area, from discovery and problem definition through delivery, adoption, and outcome realization, with authority to make day-to-day product and delivery decisions within the strategic direction established by GIS Leadership; individual contributor role.
Product Strategy, Discovery & Roadmap
- Defines the problem statement, business impact, product goal, and measurable success criteria for each initiative before work begins.
- Develops initiative recommendations and recommends future roadmap priorities and investment trade-offs to the GIS Product Lead, GIS Leadership, and applicable business leadership, grounded in business value, risk, dependencies, technical feasibility, and available capacity.
- Operates with autonomy within the approved product direction, available capacity, and established architecture standards, escalating decisions that materially change the approved outcome or create cross-product impacts.
Stakeholder Discovery
- Owns stakeholder discovery for the assigned product or system area, building standing relationships across the business and leading discovery conversations before a ticket exists.
- Determines whether a request is sufficiently defined to enter discovery, surfaces the underlying business need, and documents its impact, risk, and upstream and downstream effects.
- Owns the value and business-viability questions in discovery, determines when additional stakeholder validation is needed, and partners with the Enterprise Architect or Developer Anchor on usability and feasibility before development starts.
Backlog & Delivery Partnership
- Serves as the bridge between the business and GIS Developers, translating business needs into clear requirements and translating technical constraints and trade-offs back into business terms.
- Owns product backlog order and readiness for assigned systems, including clear requirements, acceptance criteria, value statements, and documented dependencies. Independently sequences approved work within the assigned area.
- Makes day-to-day delivery decisions and scope clarifications, including story-level and feature-level trade-offs that do not materially change the approved outcome. Escalates material changes to the GIS Product Lead, applicable GIS Leadership, and affected business leadership.
- Leads user acceptance testing and release readiness with stakeholders and determines whether delivered work meets business requirements.
Adoption, Outcomes & Reporting
- Remains accountable after release for adoption and outcome realization. Owns routine stakeholder communication for the assigned area, gathers feedback, evaluates results against the defined success criteria, and determines which product or process metrics should be monitored. Uses those results to recommend follow-up improvements, backlog changes, or future roadmap investment.
- Communicates progress, blockers, decisions, and unplanned work in business terms and keeps related product documentation accurate and complete.
What you’ll need:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of CRM systems, ERP systems, and other business systems and how they connect, sufficient to explain what each can and cannot do and to translate between business and technical audiences in both directions.
- Ability to define a business problem, assess its impact and risk, and identify upstream and downstream effects before recommending an initiative.
- Ability to lead discovery conversations, determine when a request is ready to advance, and document findings so the appropriate solution can be evaluated and delivery can proceed.
- Ability to translate approved product goals into clear requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and value statements and to validate them with stakeholders.
- Ability to make day-to-day product decisions independently and bring leadership a specific, reasoned recommendation when a decision affects roadmap direction, capacity, architecture, or the approved outcome.
- Ability to define measurable success criteria before work begins and evaluate adoption, process performance, stakeholder feedback, and business outcomes after release.
- Comfort using AI-assisted tools (for example Claude or Copilot) to draft acceptance criteria, summaries, and status updates, while validating the output and applying company data-handling policies.
Experience
- 5+ years of product owner, product management, or business systems experience supporting enterprise applications.
- Experience owning priorities and a delivery-ready backlog for an assigned product or system area in an Agile environment amid competing stakeholder demands.
- Experience partnering with architects and developers from discovery through release.
