Building on more than 50 years of chlor-alkali experience, thyssenkrupp nucera is expanding water electrolysis technology to produce green hydrogen at industrial scale for green value chains and an industry powered by clean energy.
About the Role:
thyssenkrupp nucera USA is seeking an experienced Instrumentation Engineer to support instrumentation engineering activities for industrial process projects. Reporting to the Instrumentation Lead, this position is responsible for developing engineering deliverables, supporting project execution, and providing technical expertise throughout the design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases of projects.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop instrumentation deliverables including instrument index, I/O lists, datasheets, loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, cable schedules, and installation layouts.
  • Specify and review field instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level, analyzers, control valves, safety devices) per project requirements.
  • Perform design activities such as cable engineering, hook-ups, BOM estimation, and instrument layout.
  • Prepare technical specifications, material requisitions, bid evaluations (TBE), and review vendor documentation.
  • Support HAZOP, LOPA, SIL studies and provide input to P&IDs and control philosophies.
  • Coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, piping, and automation teams.
  • Participate in 3D model reviews for accessibility and constructability.
  • Interface with clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Review DCS, PLC, analyzer, and packaged equipment documentation under guidance.
  • Support FATs, SATs, loop checks, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting.
  • Support retrofit, brownfield, and plant maintenance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with ISA, IEC, NEC, API, and client standards.
  • Work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and collaborate across global nucera teams to ensure aligned project execution.
  • Travel 20–30%  domestically and internationally to support project requirements, including construction and commissioning activities.

Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related electrical discipline required.
  • EIT/FE certification and commitment to pursue PE licensure required; PE preferred
  • NCEES record and ability to obtain reciprocity licenses, as needed.
  • Minimum of 3 years of instrumentation engineering experience in industrial, chemical, petrochemical, refining, energy, or process manufacturing facilities.
  • Experience with valve sizing, field instrumentation design, and instrumentation specifications is required
  • Experience with DCS, PLC, SCADA, and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) is plus.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable ISA, IEC, NEC, NFPA, and API standards.
  • Experience developing instrumentation deliverables in a project environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering tools such as SmartPlant, COMOS, and AutoCAD - preferred.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) - preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Ability to travel and work on-site as needed.
