About the Role:

We are seeking a Litigation counsel to join the Legal Employment & Litigation team to meet the expanding needs of our company and our customers.  In this role, you’ll advise and counsel on a range of litigation, including commercial and consumer disputes, and investigate and respond to regulatory investigations, and third-party audit and information requests.  If you thrive in fast paced environments, and excel at finding creative solutions, dreaming big, and executing on complex cross functional projects this role is perfect for you!

About the Team:

Gusto’s Legal & Compliance team partners with product teams to enable innovation, facilitate responsible company growth, accelerate the Gusto roadmap, and provide compliant products to our customers, through solution-focused counsel on legal and business risks. We are passionate about using groundbreaking technology and excellent service to elevate the experience of small business owners and their employees. Each team member is a true owner and makes a tremendous impact every day.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Provide legal advice and counsel on a wide range of pre-litigation, litigation and regulatory disputes, including commercial, consumer, and IP disputes and regulatory investigations and enforcement actions
  • Respond to regulatory agency audits, investigations, and demands for information
  • Partner with internal teams to conduct-fact finding and draft responses to demand letters and other third-party requests for information
  • Manage and oversee outside counsel in litigation matters, effectively managing costs
  • Proactively identify, analyze, and mitigate legal risks

Here’s what you’ll need for this role:

  • JD degree and a member of a State bar/active license to practice law.
  • 5+ years of combined legal experience in handling litigation, investigations, and enforcement matters, with experience working in an in-house legal department at a technology company.
  • Experience interacting with Federal and State regulatory agencies

Here’s what we’d love to see you bring to the table:

  • A collaborative approach and demonstrated ability to work well independently under pressure, while contributing to cross-functional teams.
  • Enthusiasm for how technology can streamline and improve processes and pain points.
  • Experience with bankruptcy, employment, securities, and/or ERISA law.
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus and build strong relationships.
  • An eagerness to dive in, build, and drive projects independently.
  • Experience creatively solving problems, taking into account legal risk and business needs.
  • A team player mindset (no job is too big or too small).
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow through in a fast-paced environment.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $168,000/yr to $207,000/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $198,000/yr to $244,000/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role).
