Hands-on Manufacturing Engineer responsible for site SHEA leadership, hazard abatement, manual machining and pump assembly workflow optimization, tooling and fixture design, capital projects, shop layout improvements, and continuous improvement. The role partners with machinists, mechanics, vendors, and safety specialists to improve safety, quality, and efficiency in an industrial pump repair facility.
Flowserve is seeking a hands-on Manufacturing & Safety Engineer to join our flagship aftermarket Quick Response Center (QRC) in West Chicago, IL. Operating within a modern, climate-controlled, non-union 50,000 sq. ft. repair facility, this dual-impact operational role bridges manufacturing engineering, shop tooling solutions, and site SHEA (Safety, Health, and Environmental Affairs) leadership.
Reporting directly to the Site Operations Manager, you will serve as the facility's go-to technical resource for eliminating safety hazards through practical engineering controls, optimizing manual machining and pump assembly workflows, and driving continuous improvement. You will partner closely with manufacturing leaders, machinists, mechanics, and corporate safety specialists to ensure seamless, safe, and efficient aftermarket overhaul execution across industrial pumps and rotating machinery.
Key Responsibilities
- Site SHEA Leadership: Direct day-to-day safety, health, and environmental programs across the facility, managing safety observation tracking, trend investigations, shop toolbox talks, and annual site safety audits.
- Practical Hazard Abatement: Partner with machinists and technicians to design out physical, ergonomic, and mechanical risks using engineered solutions, custom fixturing, and improved equipment guarding.
- Inbound Chemical & Material Safety: Review and sign off on Return Goods Forms, verifying that incoming industrial pumps and equipment from customer sites are properly decontaminated before shop teardown.
- Manufacturing Tooling & Fixturing: Support the manual machine shop (boring mills, vertical/horizontal lathes) and welding teams with specialty tooling selection, lifting rig concepts, and custom assembly fixtures, collaborating with external tooling vendors as needed.
- Capital Projects & Shop Layout: Lead investigations, technical justifications, and implementation for facility CapEx investments, new machine tool acquisitions, and shop footprint enhancements.
- Continuous Improvement & Quality: Collaborate with shop leadership on Root Cause Analysis (RCA), resolving shop non-conformances (NCRs), reducing rework, and eliminating process bottlenecks.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 3–7+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering, plant operations, or production engineering within a heavy industrial, machining, or rotating equipment environment.
- Safety Awareness: Practical working knowledge of OSHA standards, shop hazard identification, job safety analysis (JSA), and machine shop safety practices.
- Mechanical & Shop Acumen: Solid understanding of manual metal-cutting operations (lathes, mills), welding, Disassembly/Cleaning/Inspection (DCI), and mechanical assembly.
- Tooling & Design Tools: Familiarity with basic 3D CAD platforms (SolidWorks, Inventor, or AutoCAD) to evaluate or design lifting aids, fixtures, and shop layout revisions.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical discipline (practical industrial experience strongly considered in lieu of degree).
