JOB SUMMARY

The Natural Resources Manager is responsible for providing leadership to other maintenance employees and volunteers, and performing a wide variety of restoration tasks, including invasive species control, prescribed burning, seed collection, plant propagation and community outreach at both The Grove and Air Station Prairie. Additionally, assistance may be provided to other Glenview Park District staff and facilities with regard to natural area restoration and controlled burn management plans and training, and assist with general maintenance duties and assistance with special events as necessary. The Natural Resource Manager is responsible to perform the following essential functions including, but not limited to:

  • Prepare and implement management plans for the control and removal of invasive species, including cutting, burning and herbicide application.
  • Oversee native seed collection, processing and dissemination as well as native plant propagation and installation.
  • Manage prescribed burn program including developing burn plans and crew schedules, obtaining permits and distributing required notifications and completing all reports. Oversee all prescribed burning of brush piles and controlled prairie and woodland burns at The Grove and Air Station Prairie.
  • Develop, manage and implement overall land management plans, including budgets, long and short term goals, scheduling and specifications. Maintain detailed maps and records of restoration activities, burning and pesticide use. Assist with management plans for other areas of district.
  • Conduct monitoring, surveys and tasks required by Village of Glenview, Army Corps, Illinois Nature Preserves Commission and other regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate, train and assign work to part time employees, interns and volunteers. Work closely with North Branch Restoration group and other service groups. Organize and oversee public works days.
  • Works with the public to educate about the importance of native ecosystems and ecological restoration. Conduct public programming, community outreach and site tours as requested.
  • Research new trends and techniques for pest management, climate change and other issues that may arise.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor’s in Ecology, Botany, Resource management or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Candidates should also have at least 3 years’ relevant experience in resource management or restoration.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Ability to use or learn GIS systems.
  • Illinois Pesticide license and Illinois Prescribed Burn Manager certificate required, or the ability to acquire such certifications. Illinois Arborist license preferred.

SCHEDULING & PAY:

  • This is a full-time, salaried position.
  • The hours are generally Tuesday-Saturday, 8:00-4:30 p.m., with additional evening and weekend work as needed.
  • The anticipated hiring salary range is $72,758.40-$80,944.25. The full pay range is $72,758.40-$105,500.74.
