YOUR ROLE: The News Writer is responsible for writing timely, compelling, and well-researched stories on legislation, elections, and policy issues impacting Catholics in public life. Stories may also include religion and Church news. In addition to daily reporting, this role includes the critical duty of formatting and sending The LOOP, CatholicVote’s flagship daily newsletter, ensuring it is delivered with accuracy, clarity, and punctuality. You will work closely with the editor-in-chief and political editor to maintain high journalistic standards and a distinctly Catholic voice in all content. This position is fully remote, but candidates should be located in the Western U.S., Alaska, or Hawaii in order to provide evening coverage once our East Coast staff has signed off.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
  • Write daily news stories on legislation, religion, elections, public policy, and political trends impacting Catholics.
  • Pitch daily and weekly story ideas with a Catholic and cultural lens.
  • Format and send The LOOP newsletter each weekday, ensuring all content is accurate, timely, and properly sourced.
  • Summarize top news stories for The LOOP with clarity and brevity, highlighting relevance for Catholic readers.
  • Work under the editor-in-chief and to meet daily editorial goals and standards.
  • Conduct interviews and research as needed to provide original reporting and insight.
  • Monitor legislative updates, policy trends, and political commentary from trustworthy sources.
  • Stay attuned to political and cultural shifts that may affect the Church, families, or the common good.
  • Participate in editorial planning meetings and contribute to shaping CatholicVote’s news coverage.
QualificationsWHAT YOU NEED:

In addition to the above, the ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Strong reporting and writing skills with experience in journalism, politics, or communications.
  • Practicing Catholic with working knowledge of Church teaching and the U.S. political landscape.
  • Familiarity with email platforms, basic HTML, and newsletter formatting preferred.
  • Ability to manage deadlines and thrive in a fast-paced, remote environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, especially under time pressure.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, political science, theology, or related field preferred.
  • Located in the Western U.S., Alaska, or Hawaii.
PHYSICAL JOB CONDITIONS:
  • Work may be performed seated for long periods of time with close PC and keyboard work.
  • Normal office environment and noise levels. Average lift less than 10 lbs.
LOCATION:  Western U.S., Alaska, Hawaii. This position is remote.
