Underwriting Consultant - Dental and Nursing Programs-UND0003NC
This position can be filled within Chicago home office or a branch office (ideally in the Philadelphia area) or remote.
Job Summary
Individual contributor responsible for underwriting and managing a portfolio of medical malpractice program business including nurses, allied healthcare professionals, dentists, and small healthcare group practices. Recognized as a technical expert in an underwriting specialty. Under general management direction works within broad limits of authority on assignments requiring a high degree of technical complexity and coordination.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of healthcare business collaborating with a managing general underwriter (MGU) partner to support complex medical malpractice underwriting risks to assess acceptability in accordance with CNA’s guidelines and standards.
- Determine appropriate pricing of risks for assigned book of business based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.
- Participate with management in the development and implementation of underwriting guidelines, policy, marketing, business strategy and MGU audit reviews
- Analyzes quality quantity and profitability of risks underwritten; prepares and presents reports to management and MGU and Healthcare Association partners.
- Develop and maintain relationships with Claim, Actuarial, Risk Control and MGU partners as a trusted advisor to facilitate negotiation, secure commitment, and to ensure positive and profitable outcomes.
- Keeps current on state/territory issues, healthcare regulations, industry activity and trends.
- Utilizes advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities.
- Responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations.
- Develop and implement operating plans for enhancing the business and meeting strategic premium objectives
Reporting Relationship
Position reports to the AVP Affinity Healthcare
Skills Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of underwriting processes and tools to gather and evaluate information in order to reach appropriate decisions on renewals and new business.
- Familiarity with healthcare professional liability coverages.
- Strong written and oral communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
- Ability to exercise judgment, negotiate and make sound business decisions effectively based on level of authority
- Ability to uncover customer needs, position specific solutions and negotiate resolution.
- Strong ability to identify, analyze and solve problems as well as the ability to learn rapidly, adapt quickly to change, exercise influence, and manage and prioritize multiple concurrent projects
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree
- Typically a minimum eight years underwriting experience.
- Professional designations a plus
- Experience working with Programs, third party administrator or MGU relationships.
