The opportunity:

Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to lead strategic data science initiatives and drive the development of advanced ML models. This mission-critical role will contribute to HBP’s next generation of edtech and media products and support data initiatives across the organization. The role requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership skills.

What you’ll do

  • Develop and lead execution of the research roadmaps for: (1) Agentic GenAI applications (our first customer-facing product is already in production and a second is in active development). (2) Better understanding HBP’s unique content library to support a range of customer-facing and internal use cases. (3) Personalization of our media and learning products

  • Participate in the prototyping, software implementation, monitoring, and upkeep of customer-facing and internal data products

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs, define project requirements, and influence product roadmaps

  • Stay at the cutting edge of ML/AI literature and practice, periodically reevaluating the architecture of our models and identifying opportunities for improvement

  • Perform a variety of data analyses to support decision making, communicating findings and recommendations to stakeholders

  • Participate in ETL development (dbt), dashboard development (Tableau), and A/B testing

  • Mentor and guide other data scientists, analysts, and engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement

  • Identify opportunities to apply data science to support use cases across HBP, in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders

What we’re looking for

  • 10+ years of data science research experience, with a strong focus on machine learning and statistical analysis

  • 3+ years of experience deploying machine learning models to production

  • Deep understanding of the algorithms underlying a variety of statistical and machine learning models relevant to information retrieval, GenAI, NLP, and personalization

  • Strong programming and algorithm development skills as applied to working with large data sets in Python

  • Experience leading large-scale, multi-year research projects

  • Practicality, a bias for action, and comfort with ambiguity

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to draw robust conclusions from data

  • Excellent communication and team collaboration skills

$200,000 - $250,000

Above is the annualized pay range for this position. In addition, this position includes the opportunity to earn our annual Performance Based Variable Pay Program. Actual salary will be set based upon a range of factors, including external benchmark market data, individual knowledge, skills, experience, location and internal equity.
