Position Summary:

Hiring Salary Range: $21.92 to $34.38 depending on qualifications.The Public Safety Specialist is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through proactive patrol, customer service, emergency response, crime prevention, and enforcement of college policies. The position serves as a visible public safety presence while supporting emergency management, access control, special events, and daily campus operations.
Public Safety Specialists work collaboratively with local law enforcement, fire rescue, emergency medical services, and other college departments to protect life and property and support the educational mission of Hillsborough College.
There are 5 positions available for the Fall semester 2026.
The Public Safety Specialist is expected to:
• Exercise greater independent judgment than a Public Safety Officer.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on campus safety operations.
• Provide technical leadership without supervisory authority.
• Mentor and train new Public Safety Officers.
• Support emergency management and incident command functions.
• Assist with specialized projects and initiatives.
Job Duties:
  • Perform all duties of a Public Safety Officer.
  • Serve as a lead public safety resource during routine operations and emergency incidents in the absence of the Sergeant.
  • Provide guidance and mentor Public Safety Officers and assist with training of new personnel.
  • Coordinate responses to complex incidents and assist the Sergeant with incident management.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Lead officer in monitoring and operating security technology, including security cameras, access control, emergency communication, etc.
  • Assist with administration duties when necessary.
  • Support with emergency preparedness training.
  • Conduct security assessments of campus facilities and recommend improvements to enhance safety and security.
  • Coordinate or assist the Sergeant with security operations for special events, VIP visits, and College Functions.
  • Serve as a liaison with local law enforcement, fire rescue, and other public safety partners.
  • Assist the supervisor in preparing work schedules, planning, and coordinating daily operations and special events.
  • Ensure all office/security equipment is accounted for in its proper place and operates properly.
  • Assist with developing and delivering safety training, crime prevention programs, and emergency preparedness presentations for students and employees.
  • Maintain proficiency in public safety technology, emergency response procedures, and applicable federal, state, and college regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Public Safety Sergeant. 
Minimum Requirements:  The position requires a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience in public safety, security, law enforcement, military, emergency management, customer service, or a related field. In addition, requires a current:(1) Florida Class D security license,(2) CPR and first aid certification, and(3) Florida driver’s license.To successfully perform this role, an employee must be able to carry out the essential functions of this job satisfactorily.
