The Technical Director must possess a thorough understanding of broadcast methods of measuring audio and video signals to ensure quality control of ESPN endorsed standards on all events. Taking directions from the show Director, the TD operates the transition between video sources to maintain the high quality standards. Requires the ability to work well under pressure and deadlines. Must be able to direct a crew in the absence of additional on-site management.
Position Summary:
The Technical Director works on a variety of video switchers and automation systems to support productions. Work will be performed in a fast-paced environment for a wide variety of content relying on both traditional and non-traditional production approaches. The Technical Director needs to understand technical workflows and is responsible for building and maintaining show elements, switcher files, routing signals, and creatively executing the in-game vision of the Event Show Director and Content Production partners.
Responsibilities:
- Operates in the Technical Director role during Live Events and executes the in-game visual requirements and calls from Event Show Director, Producer, and Associate Director; including multiple discrete feeds (e.g. Clean Feeds, Aux outputs, etc.). Builds and maintains TD files and switcher effects, intakes custom requests, prioritizes and problem solves, and drives communication and documentation to all pertinent partners and teammates.
- Collaborates across the enterprise to plan the needs of the Event Operations team for specific productions. Participates in planning meetings and prep sessions with partners in Content Production and closely related departments.
- Participates in the development of fellow operations staff through training and workshops. Participation in training such as physical, mobile unit, classroom, virtual, etc.) for development and/or technology enhancements applicable to work within the operation.
- Applies basic understanding of all professional and collegiate sports including year-round storylines, key players and games, strategy, and rules to quickly recognize and identify key moments, and anticipate the needs and choices of Show Director and Content Production staff.
- Troubleshoot technical broadcast equipment, solve workflow issues and effectively communicate the issue and resolution needed within the scope of the operation.
- Must possess a deep knowledge of technology of video, audio, graphics, and replay equipment.
Qualifications:
- Candidate must possess strong communications and interpersonal skills and organizational abilities.
- Candidate must possess strong attention to detail and work independently in a demanding deadline driven environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years professional experience related to broadcast or technical operations including onsite experience with remote transport and transmission systems.
- Professional experience in operating processes of remote productions and remote transport systems.
- Strong knowledge of Production workflow and operating systems.
- Strong knowledge of telecom services.
- Experience managing and implementing multiple budgets.
Required Education:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.

Must be able to lift more than 50lbs, work and/or travel on nights, holidays, and weekends.
The pay rate for this remote role is $82 to $100 per hour. The base pay actually offered may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
