Description

The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and enforcing safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment within Aurora Packing Company (APC).  This role supports the Safety Manager and involves conducting safety inspections, training employees, investigating incidents, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and company safety policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of APC safety policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct regular facility inspections to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead safety training sessions, including new hire orientations, emergency response, PPE use, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Investigate accidents, near-misses, and injuries; prepare reports and recommend preventive measures.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with environmental and safety standards.
  • Monitor and enforce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with supervisors and management to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain accurate safety records, including OSHA logs, training documentation, and incident reports.
  • Support the development of emergency preparedness and response plans.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs) and risk assessments for facility operations.

Requirements

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, or related field.
  • 3+ years of verifiable experience in safety, preferably in food processing or manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and industry-specific safety regulations.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills to influence the APC safety culture.
  • Experience with ammonia refrigeration systems and associated PSM requirements is preferred.
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification preferred. 
  • Ability to conduct APC safety training and engage employees at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and documentation.
  • First Aid/CPR/BBP certification required.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, and strong odors associated with beef plant operations.
  • Availability to work all shifts, including weekends.
  • Must be able to frequently stand, walk, and climb stairs/ladders in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • 24/7 emergency response availability is required.
