Position Summary:
Kemper is a publicly traded, multi-billion-dollar insurance and financial services company, and we are seeking a talented and motivated accounting professional to join our SEC & Financial Reporting team at our headquarters in downtown Chicago. This is a fantastic role for a strong performer who is looking to greatly expand their knowledge within a multi-faceted insurance company (P&C, Life) that has exposure to financial reporting under SEC, GAAP, Statutory, and ERISA accounting frameworks. Kemper has a proven track record for developing its people for higher roles within the department as well as other functions and across its operating entities. We seek a detail-oriented professional to assist with a wide range of monthly, quarterly and annual accounting functions associated with Kemper’s financial reporting.
Position Responsibilities:
- Assisting in preparation of financial statements, footnotes and schedules on various business processes such as insurance reserves, investment performance, share based compensation, and earnings per share included in public filings (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, 11-K, etc.)
- Managing the workflow of information from the ledger and source systems into financial reporting software (Workiva)
- Overseeing the implementation of all standard and custom XBRL tags within SEC Filings
- Collaborating with outside stakeholders over the accurate intake of information for public filings
- Assisting with planning and coordinating the SEC filing calendar to help the Company meet or exceed goals
- Performing research around emerging accounting guidance and unique operational transactions
- Reviewing the prepared work of Staff Accountants and providing meaningful feedback
- Designing, preparing and analyzing management reports
- Coordination with internal and external auditors for SOX control and SEC filing supporting documentation
- Facilitation of SEC reporting-related SOX control program
- Creating and performing ad hoc queries and analyses
Position Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree in Accounting
- CPA or CPA candidate required
- 2-5 years of experience in public accounting and/or SEC financial reporting role
- Effective writing skills and strong attention to detail required
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills
- Progressive thinking skills, a strong work ethic, and a knack for innovative solutions
- Excellent communication skills to interact with varying levels of management and professional staff
- Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex accounting issues
The range for this position is $68,000-$113,400. When determining candidate offers, we consider experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location among other factors. This job is also eligible for our Kemper benefits package (Medical, Dental, Vision, PTO, 401k, etc.)
