La Rabida Children’s Hospital provides specialized, family-centered health care to children with medically complex conditions, disabilities, and chronic illness. Through expertise, compassion, and advocacy we help children and their families reach their fullest potential, regardless of their ability to pay.
Our not-for-profit hospital, licensed for 49 beds, helps transition children from neonatal or pediatric intensive care to home, by providing medical, rehabilitative and developmental care, and by training families to continue treatments and manage the necessary equipment in the home. La Rabida also provides extensive rehabilitation for those recovering from wounds or burns and treatment for exacerbations of chronic conditions.
The hospital’s enhanced pediatric patient-centered medical home provides primary care to children with complex medical conditions and their siblings. Children with medical homes elsewhere come to La Rabida for specialty services. La Rabida offers a wide range of specialty services provided to children with sickle cell disease, diabetes, and many others. Children are supported in their emotional and developmental growth, particularly in cases where such growth has been interrupted by accident or disease.
Finally, La Rabida provides forensic and treatment services for children exposed to abuse and neglect, comprehensive assessments for youth in care, early intervention for children between 0 and 3 years of age. Care coordination services for medically complex children are also provided for those who are covered by a health plan and receive care from providers in Cook County
Job DescriptionThe Senior Accountant, Hospital Operations will be responsible for preparing monthly journal entries, reconciling accounts, documenting business transactions, and maintaining a sound internal control structure for hospital operations.
In addition, this role will be responsible for supporting internal and external audit activities. The Senior Accountant will also be a key business partner to the operations they support, providing relevant and timely information related to financial results. The Senior Accountant is expected to partner with other members of the finance team to support budgeting, financial analysis, and ad hoc report requests.
Prepare and post monthly journal entries in accordance with GAAP, internal policies, and closing schedules
Perform month-end close responsibilities, including account reconciliations and variance analysis
Prepare monthly account analyses to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial statements
Reconcile general ledger accounts and investigate/resolve discrepancies
Provide clear and concise monthly financial reporting and analysis to operational leaders and senior management
Explain key variances between actual and budgeted results
Support internal, external, and regulatory audits, including preparation of audit workpapers and documentation
Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls
Partner with operations and finance teams to support budgeting, financial analysis, and ad hoc reporting
Serve as backup for Accounts Payable and assist with vendor payments and fixed asset accounting
Ensure strong internal control structure across hospital operations
Participate in special projects and initiatives to support departmental growth and organizational goals
Required Qualifications
Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and concepts including Revenue, Prepaids, Accruals, Inventory, etc.
Familiarity with relevant regulations and compliance requirements.
Proficiency in financial analysis, reporting tools, use of excel and other analytical tools.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and as a team to solve problems and raise issues and drive continuous improvement.
Attention to detail and ability to work accurately under tight deadlines.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Advanced computer skills required including knowledge and proficiency with spreadsheet and database programs.
Strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills; able to take complex information and present it in a clear and concise manner.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Must be able to articulate issues in a precise, substantive manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
5 years of Accounting work experience, preferably in Healthcare.
Ability to understand the interrelationships between the Finance department systems and other department systems.
Demonstrates a high degree of flexibility and resourcefulness in the performance of work responsibilities and assignments.
Knowledge in the processing of accounting transactions, reports, and reconciliations.
Knowledge of financial systems and sub systems and ability to trace general ledger transactions through to sub-systems to ensure accurate and appropriate system generated activity.
Must function cooperatively as part of the finance team and exhibit flexibility in response to changing demands and priorities.
Advanced level MS Office skills including Excel and Word,
Knowledge of Accounting software within an accounting function.
