This role reports to a UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Deputy Litigation Counsel leader and is accountable for managing litigation matters across the enterprise.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manage defensive litigation and arbitration matters for the enterprise
  • Identify, select, and proactively oversee outside counsel in connection with all aspects of litigation and arbitration to ensure cost-effective and high-quality legal representation
  • Represent the organization at depositions, mediations, hearings, arbitrations, and trials
  • May provide legal counsel in connection with internal investigations, subpoenas, and responses to government inquiries
  • Develop, maintain, and leverage deep knowledge of healthcare law and the healthcare industry in connection with job duties
  • Effectively build and strengthen relationships with constituents across the organization to understand business issues and effectively manage legal risk
  • Provide legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations, risks, and privileges of the organization

Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Licensed in one or more jurisdictions
  • 10+ years of complex litigation experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department, preferably with a focus on healthcare law
  • Significant experience with complex commercial, consumer, or class action litigation and arbitration matters
  • Strategic thinker with demonstrated experience evaluating and determining best legal course of action to meet business needs
  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, internal business partners, and external company contacts

Preferred Qualifications:
  • First chair trial or arbitration experience
  • Experience successfully collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment
  • Experience providing advice to senior business leaders
  • Knowledge of healthcare law, including ERISA and/or Knox-Keene
  • Proven ability to collaborate and work in a team environment

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $159,300 to $273,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
