BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Database Administrator with deep expertise in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) database services and familiarity with IBM Db2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows (DB2 LUW). This fully remote role offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical health insurance systems in a dynamic, collaborative environment. You will be responsible for designing, securing, automating, and maintaining cloud-native database platforms on GCP, while supporting other database systems (DB2 LUW) and supporting modernization and cloud migration initiatives.
Our ideal candidate will have:
  • Extensive GCP Database Experience: Proven expertise in designing, deploying, and managing databases on Google Cloud Platform (using services such as BigQuery or Cloud SQL) in large-scale production environments.
  • Cloud-Native Architecture & Performance Tuning: Experience building highly available, scalable database solutions on GCP and optimizing their performance (query tuning, indexing, capacity planning) to support complex healthcare applications.
  • Database Security & Compliance: Strong knowledge of cloud database security best practices (access controls, encryption, network policies) and experience ensuring compliance with data protection regulations (e.g., HIPAA) to safeguard sensitive patient data.
  • High Availability & Disaster Recovery: Hands-on experience implementing robust backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions on GCP to ensure 24/7 uptime and data integrity (e.g., automated backups, point-in-time recovery, replication/failover strategies).
  • Automation & DevOps: Proficiency in automating database administration tasks (backups, updates, monitoring) using scripting or Infrastructure-as-Code tools (e.g., Terraform, Python, Bash) and supporting CI/CD pipelines for database changes.

  • On-call rotation is part of the schedule for this team.
  • While this is a fully remote role, the final round of interviews will take place onsite at our Chattanooga, TN office. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Utilizing logical models to ensure efficient and reliable database performance.
  • Designing and developing logical and physical layers for various databases. Leading in handling data testing, reporting, back-ups and restorations.
  • Managing and maintaining data in all production and non-production databases and replication servers.
  • Providing technical assistance and mentoring staff on developing conceptual and logical database designs and physical databases.

Job Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Computer Sciences related field or equivalent work experience

Experience

  • 5 years - Systems and programming experience required

Skills\Certifications

  • Proven skill with information technology in use at BCBST is required
  • Proven analysis, design, and coding skills, and demonstrated success in leading large and complex projects
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical co-workers
