Cook Inlet Region, Inc is seeking a Senior Director, Accounting to join our team. CIRI's offices are conveniently located in mid-town Anchorage at the Fireweed Business Center, a modern building that represents CIRI’s cultural diversity, respect for the land, and sustainability. The Fireweed Business Center reflects our heritage in the displayed Alaska Native art and interior design.

CIRI offers a hybrid work schedule for employees based in Anchorage, AK. Senior Director, Accounting can be based in Anchorage, AK or offers a fully remote schedule should the incumbent live outside of Anchorage, AK.  Remote employees are required to travel to the corporate office on a regular schedule.

General Function

In alignment with CIRI’s mission and values, the Senior Director of Accounting is responsible for the accounting and financial reporting for CIRI and its affiliates. This role oversees the design, delivery and continuous improvement of accounting functions within a shared service environment and ensures accurate financial reporting from subsidiaries and investments in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) across multiple industry segments and ensures strong internal controls and efficient workflow processes and compliance with laws and regulations of all corporate services functions performed within the accounting department.

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  1. Efficiently, effectively and actively supervise and manage a diverse staff, including performance management, annual employee appraisals, career development and goal setting, team building that fosters innovation and solutions, staff planning and training. This role mentors, coaches and develops the accounting team while driving operational excellence.
  2. Oversee the preparation of complex monthly consolidated financial statements across multiple industries for CIRI and its subsidiaries.
  3. Responsible for ensuring strong internal controls, efficient and documented workflow process, and compliance with laws and regulations of all service functions performed within the accounting department, including accounts payables, accounts receivables, payroll and fixed assets.
  4. Assist leadership in implementing corporate goals, policies, priorities and procedures related to shared services provided by accounting.
  5. Lead process standardization to create an effective and efficient shard services accounting team, develop and maintain metric to track efficiency, quality and customer satisfaction.
  6. Partner with the Senior Director of FP&A to ensure effective analysis and reporting of actual, budgeted and projected data.
  7. Oversee the integration of accounting activities of CIRI’s diverse investments and subsidiaries into CIRI’s accounting system, ensuring accurate financial reporting and adherence with GAAP.
  8. Research, analyze and report on changes in GAAP and the impact to CIRI and its subsidiaries. Provide technical accounting GAAP guidance and support to all CIRI entities. Work with subsidiary accounting management staff to ensure consistent application of current GAAP requirements.
  9. Partner with the Director of M&A to ensure effective acquisition due diligence efforts focusing on financial performance, US GAAP and risk. Lead the integration of acquirees into the financials processes, procedures and systems of the enterprise.
  • Oversee the purchase price allocation process and related accounting entries and footnote disclosure for all acquisitions and dispositions; identify any accounting issues and impacts to financial reporting.
  • Oversee the preparation of CIRI’s audited consolidated financial statements, footnotes and management’s discussion and analysis, including technical writing for the MD&A and footnotes. Oversee the annual financial audits of CIRI, its subsidiaries, the CIRI Settlement Trust and other audits, including the ANCSA Section 7(i) and 401(k) plan audits.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, including but not limited to employee federal and multistate payroll, department of labor, workers compensation, property taxes and Sections 7(i), (j) and (m) of ANCSA.
  • Oversee the preparation of quarterly financial statements and compliance packages for third parties.
  • Work directly with Company departments and subsidiaries in providing support during the annual budget compilation.
  • Provide leadership and management for a variety of ad hoc initiatives, including but not limited to accounting input into long-term strategic analysis, grant administration and reporting, process and system enhancements, and all other accounting structures for new business models related to areas of responsibility.
  • Provide leadership and management of software changes and on-going administration, including the identification, contract management, assembly of project plans, design and implementation Provide assistance on all major financial projects.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate and as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Understand CIRI’s mission, vision, values and strategic focus areas and incorporate knowledge into daily activities.
  • Excellent understanding of GAAP, procedures, theories and the ability to apply concepts in practical situations.
  • Strong understanding of Cost Accounting Standards, FAR and DCAA readiness
  • Superior analytical skills.
  • Ability to develop and communicate strategic plans while managing and maintaining day to day processes.
  • Strong sense of organization.
  • Ability to develop comprehensive work plans for short, mid-range and long-term projects such as financial analysis for operating departments and accounting and internal control considerations. Ability to manage such projects and to perform many of the related project tasks.
  • Proven experience preparing complex consolidated financial statements.
  • Ability to assess an accounting process, propose recommendations, implement new procedures and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Experience preparing and analyzing operating, capital and cash flow pro forma and budgets.
  • Proficiency in computers including industry-standard computer software and Microsoft Office suites with accurate data entry skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal and technical skills appropriate for regular communication with Company and subsidiary management and staff, and managerial professionals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff, affiliated-company employees as well as outside business associates; exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others.
  • Financial, tax, and audit skills commensurate with a corporation the size and functional orientation of CIRI.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills; ability to exercise good judgment and work effectively under pressure.
  • Proven ability to lead, supervise and manage a diverse staff.
  • High degree of sensitivity regarding confidential information.

Physical Abilities

    • Sufficient fine motor skills for use of computers, calculators with an ability to withstand repetitive keyboarding for extended periods of time.
    • Visual and communication abilities adequate to perform the essential functions of the job.
    • Ability to kneel, bend and twist at the waist on an occasional basis.
    • Ability to reach below shoulder height with regular frequency (desk position) and at or above shoulder height on occasion.
    • Ability to push, pull, carry and lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds on a regular basis, and greater weights on an occasional basis.
    • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and travel by vehicle or aircraft.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
    • 10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, 5 of which must be public accounting and include complex consolidations
    • Three years supervisory experience required
    • CPA designation required
    • Experience in government contract accounting, with a large-scale organization
    • Alaska Native Corporation experience strongly preferred
    • Ability to pass a background screening
    • Ability to obtain a US government national security clearance at the Secret level
    • Ability to travel; estimated travel is up to 6 weeks annually
