ContinuServe is seeking a Senior HR Manager to join our dynamic Not-for-Profit (NFP) HR division, serving mission-driven organizations that create real impact in their communities. This is a hybrid role based in the Chicago area, with regular onsite support required at client locations throughout the city.
As a Senior HR Manager within our Not-for-Profit HR Services Team, you’ll play a vital role in supporting clients across a wide range of human resources functions while partnering closely with internal generalists and HR leadership to ensure seamless service delivery. You'll manage internal workflows, provide hands-on support for client needs, and serve as a trusted HR resource in sectors like education, social services, and other mission-focused environments.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
  • Effectively support the management of all HR functions across client accounts
  • Mentor and support HR Generalists; provide coaching and feedback
  • Provide advanced support to resolve complex or sensitive HR issues
  • Collaborate with AVP and HR Directors on recruitment, retention, and succession planning
  • Ensure compliance with evolving state, federal, and local employment laws
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive service, proactive communication, and consistent execution.
Client-Facing & Advisory
  • Support client onboarding and service management for new and existing accounts
  • Develop and manage client communications, including newsletters and HR updates
  • Conduct investigations, manage disciplinary processes, and navigate union interactions
  • Interpret employment law and CBAs while advising on best practices
HR Expertise
  • Demonstrates strong technical HR expertise across employee relations, performance management, compliance, compensation, leave administration, talent acquisition, and organizational development.
  • Provides practical, risk-averse recommendations while balancing compliance with business objectives.
  • Maintains current knowledge of employment laws, HR trends, and best practices.
Execution & Operational Excellence
  • Successfully manages multiple client priorities while consistently meeting deadlines and service expectations.
  • Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills, responsiveness, and attention to detail.
  • Leads complex HR projects from planning through implementation with measurable results.
  • Utilizes data and key performance metrics to improve service delivery and operational effectiveness.
  • Manage client email queues and daily administrative workflow for client sites
  • Manage client systems and reporting
  • Lead proactive internal audit of client files to ensure best practices are being followed
  • Demonstrates strong technology aptitude with the ability to quickly learn, leverage, and optimize HR systems, AI-enabled tools, and emerging technologies to enhance operational efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and client service delivery.
  • Refine and document SOPs and workflows internal the client services team and clients.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and embraces AI-driven tools and innovation.
  • Highly responsive, organized, and deadline-driven, with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while delivering high-quality work on time and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Champions client retention through proactive relationship management, strategic partnership, and consistent delivery of high-quality HR services.
HR Generalist Support (as needed)
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to fill key client roles
  • Function as a generalist when business needs require
  • Ensure accurate HRIS updates and policy compliance
Qualifications:
Required Experience
  • Broad generalist background across multiple HR functions
  • Experience supporting unionized environments and labor relations
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational skills and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset
  • Comfort operating in client-facing roles and handling multiple priorities
Preferred Experience
  • Familiarity with K-12 education HR and not-for-profit operations
  • Knowledge of compliance tied to IL DCFS, IL DHS, SAMHSA, and EEO
  • Background in a consulting or outsourced HR environment
Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field 
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR (highly preferred)
Work Environment
  • Hybrid role based in the Chicago area
  • Requires regular onsite support at client sites throughout the city
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation: Starting salary range: $85,000-$105,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, paid holidays, 401(k), and health insurance coverage, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
