Position Summary

The Senior Payroll Manager is responsible for supervising payroll operations and ensuring timely, accurate payroll processing and reporting for the National University NU. This role involves overseeing payroll staff, resolving pay-related issues, and ensuring compliance with local, state, federal, and international tax laws and wage regulations. The Senior Payroll Manager works closely with Human Resources and Finance departments to maintain data integrity, reconcile payroll transactions, and support organizational objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise a team of payroll professionals, providing mentorship, training, and support.
  • Manage end-to-end payroll processes, including accurate and timely preparation of all payrolls (weekly, biweekly, monthly).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations and wage laws and oversee accurate production and distribution of W-2 Forms and year-end tax reporting.
  • Administer enterprise resource planning systems (Workday, ADP, OSV, etc.), audit payroll cycle batches, and ensure proper uploads to the general ledger.
  • Research, analyze, and resolve escalated payroll issues, including audits and budget variances.
  • Review and audit monthly, quarterly and annual reconciliation of payroll reports, assist with third-party payroll requests, and support workers’ compensation audits.
  • Actively engage with cross-functional leadership to support business strategies and foster collaborative relationships.
  • Foster a cooperative and inclusive team environment, adapting to multiple deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to influence, build effective relationships and gain alignment with peers, functional partners and/or external partners to accomplish business objectives.
  • Accepts personal accountability, proactively seeks resolution for personal limitations head-on; and supports honesty and respect towards others, the organization and oneself.
  • Ability to provide excellent positive customer service across an organizational structure and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with tact and discretion. Ability to prioritize time-critical assignments.
  • Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team of diverse cultures and experiences, while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Hire, train, mentor, and develop payroll staff members.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Eight (8) or more years of relevant payroll professional experience in a high-volume environment
  • Eight (8) or more years of experience leading or supervising a team
  • An equivalent combination of education or experience may be accepted
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) preferred

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Superior knowledge of payroll processing and accounting principles in a high-volume organization.
  • Advanced understanding of payroll regulations, tax requirements, and labor laws.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and payroll systems such as Workday, ADP and OSV.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in process improvements and problem solving.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on process improvement and operational efficiency.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency.
