About Smokeball

Join an award-winning legal tech company that’s transforming how law firms work by boosting their organization, productivity, and profitability with software they actually love. Smokeball is a global, community-driven company united by a love for the law and a mission to help small and midsize firms thrive. We’re passionate about what we do and our clients know it! If you’re looking for a company that truly cares about its clients and its people, you’re in the right place.

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Product Manager to own and drive the product roadmap for a core US-focused product. This is a hands-on, end-to-end product role covering discovery, validation, prioritisation, and delivery, working closely with customers in the US market and a global engineering team based in Australia.

You will be deeply embedded with customers and US-facing internal teams to uncover problems worth solving, validate solutions, and translate those needs into clear, detailed product requirements. While engineering delivery is handled by an Australia-based team, you will be accountable for defining what gets built and why, ensuring solutions are well-scoped, customer-centric, and commercially impactful.

This role suits a pragmatic product manager who is comfortable operating independently, can move from strategy to detail, and has enough design capability to be self-sufficient during discovery and early solution definition.

This is a hybrid role with our office being in Chicago, IL.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Discovery & Market Understanding

  • Work directly with customers in the US legal market to understand workflows, pain points, and unmet needs.
  • Conduct continuous discovery through interviews, usability testing, feedback sessions, and validation activities.
  • Partner with Sales, Customer Success, and Support to identify customer friction points impacting sales, retention, or adoption.
  • Build a deep understanding of the US market, including competitive offerings and customer expectations.

Product Strategy & Roadmap Ownership

  • Own and maintain the product roadmap for your area, ensuring it reflects validated customer needs and business priorities.
  • Identify, size, and prioritise opportunities based on customer impact, commercial value, and delivery effort.
  • Clearly articulate trade-offs and recommendations when prioritising competing initiatives.

Product Definition & Requirements

  • Translate customer problems into clear product outcomes, user stories, and detailed product requirements.
  • Write high-quality PRDs that provide engineering teams with clarity on scope, behaviour, edge cases, and success criteria.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering to refine solutions, answer questions, and adjust scope as needed during delivery.
  • Act as the primary point of product decision-making throughout the build lifecycle.

Design & Solution Validation

  • Use your design skills to create low- to mid-fidelity wireframes, flows, and prototypes to support discovery and validation.
  • Partner with designers (where applicable) to refine and elevate solutions as they move toward delivery.

Global Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work closely with the Australia-based engineering team, providing clear context, priorities, and ongoing feedback.
  • Participate in planning, backlog refinement, and sprint rituals to ensure smooth execution across time zones.

Launch, Feedback & Iteration

  • Support product releases by providing clear documentation, internal enablement, and customer-facing context.
  • Gather post-launch feedback and data to assess success and inform iteration.
  • Continuously improve the product based on real-world usage and customer outcomes.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of product management experience with SaaS platforms, preferably in B2B markets.
  • Demonstrated success delivering software products from concept through launch, driving user adoption and revenue growth.
  • Expertise in defining and managing product roadmaps, prioritizing feature development, and managing cross-functional teams.
  • Keen interest in building AI-driven products and solutions.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to synthesize data and insights to inform strategic decisions.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, the ability to influence multiple levels internally and externally.
  • Familiarity with product management tools and agile methodologies; experience with Salesforce, Jira, or similar platforms preferred.

Compensation

$150,000 - 175,000 base salary

Meet Some Teammates

Reena: Hi, I’m Reena! I’m a Product Strategy Manager for Boost at Smokeball, where I focus on defining and shaping the product strategy for our web-based offering for solo and small law firms. My role centers on being the voice of the customer: deeply understanding the market, identifying where Boost fits, and helping the team achieve strong product-market fit. I spend much of my time synthesizing user feedback, uncovering points of friction, tracking product and industry trends, and translating those insights into clear, actionable direction so we can build a product that truly embeds itself into small firms’ daily workflows and drives meaningful adoption. I love working at Smokeball because I’m surrounded by people who genuinely care - about our users, our product, and each other. That shared sense of purpose and collaboration makes it incredibly rewarding to work on solutions that help legal professionals run healthier, more successful practices. Outside of work, I’m passionate about all things dance; whether it’s Indian fusion, hip hop, or salsa, if there’s a class, I’m there. I also lived in China for several years and have a deep love for Sichuan cuisine, so you can often find me on the hunt for the best spicy, numbing dishes the city has to offer.

Life at Smokeball
  • Great Culture: We’ve been named a 'Best Place to Work' five years in a row. For us, caring is not optional and we have an ongoing commitment to building a workplace where our people feel valued and collaboration flourishes.
  • Work-Life Balance: 20 vacation days, 7 sick days, 3 reboot days, 11 paid holidays, birthday off, volunteer time, and more!
  • Career Growth: Smokeball believes in investing in our own people and promoting from within. Our own President started at Smokeball as an Account Manager!
  • Benefits: Excellent medical, dental, and vision coverage. 401(k) match, monthly wellness stipend, generous parental leave.
  • The Office: The kitchen is stocked with breakfast items, snacks, and beverages, and we have plenty of games to help you relax (ping-pong, billiards, pinball). We also offer weekly catered lunch and free monthly massages provided by a licensed massage therapist!
