As a Senior Software Engineer, you will enhance our investment screening and fraud prevention platform, overseeing the software development lifecycle and collaborating with various teams for compliance-driven solutions.
Fundrise is a financial technology company on a mission to build a better financial system for the individual. With more than 2 million users and over $3 billion in assets under management, we are the largest direct-to-investor alternative asset platform in the United States, making institutional-quality real estate, private credit, and venture capital investments accessible to anyone. Through the software we build, we are democratizing the private investment industry. We continue to push into new territory: our Innovation Fund (VCX) recently listed on the NYSE as one of the first public venture capital funds, and our AI subsidiary, RealAI, is bringing institutional-grade real estate intelligence to everyday investors and professionals. Fundrise has been recognized by CNBC's World's Top Fintech Companies (2024, 2025) and the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies for three consecutive years (2023-2025).
While this is a fully remote role, candidates in the Washington, D.C. metro area are strongly preferred. Proximity to our team and business partners helps support in-person collaboration when needed.
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help evolve our investment screening and fraud prevention platform. You'll work at the intersection of compliance, risk, and automation, building systems that make accurate, reliable screening decisions at scale, informed by years of operational knowledge and real-world screening outcomes. This is not a role with perfectly defined inputs and outputs: success requires strong judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to turn nuanced operational and compliance requirements into effective software. You will collaborate closely with partners across Operations, Legal, Product, and Finance to understand requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and deliver solutions that strengthen both user experience and risk controls. This is a high-impact role where your work directly protects millions of users and shapes how we scale trust across the platform.
Who You Are
You’re motivated by solving real problems, not by chasing the newest framework or forcing a particular architecture. You make pragmatic technology choices that fit the problem and the business needs. You bring strong judgment and clear opinions, but you’re open to other ideas and are willing to be convinced your idea may not be the right one. You advocate for the best path with conviction, but once a direction is set, you align with the team and help make it successful, even when it wasn’t your first choice. You see evolving and refactoring an established, high-stakes codebase as a meaningful engineering challenge. You don't need a greenfield to do great work. You see close partnership with Legal, Finance, and Operations as an essential part of the engineering work, not a distraction from it. You’d rather ship a practical solution that works than over-engineer one that looks impressive on a whiteboard. Candidates motivated primarily by novelty in tools or architecture, rather than by delivering reliable systems that meet business needs, are unlikely to be a fit.
Responsibilities
- Design and build practical enhancements to our investment screening and fraud prevention platform, including decisioning systems and integrations with third-party data providers
- Own the end-to-end software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and production support
- Make pragmatic tradeoffs and incorporate stakeholder feedback to deliver reliable, compliant solutions without unnecessary complexity
- Maintain, monitor, and improve systems and infrastructure deployed on AWS
- Partner closely with Operations, Legal, Product, and Finance to translate screening and compliance requirements into effective software solutions
- Review pull requests and contribute to a culture of high-quality, maintainable, and pragmatic engineering
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience in Java, Spring, and Hibernate
- 4+ years of experience building and maintaining production applications on AWS, including services such as EC2, ECS, CDK, S3, SQS, Lambda, and DynamoDB.
- 3+ years of experience with SQL and relational databases, where transactions and throughput were critical to operations
- Experience making significant contributions to designing, building, and maintaining distributed systems to ensure scalability, reliability, and fault tolerance
- Experience improving existing systems and workflows in operationally complex environments, not just building greenfield systems from scratch
- Experience using AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI in day-to-day development workflows
- Demonstrated track record of effective communication and collaboration with business stakeholders
- Ability to quickly absorb and understand large and complex new domains and workflows
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in fintech, fraud detection, risk, compliance, or a similarly regulated domain
- Experience integrating with third-party identity verification, KYC/AML, or financial data providers
