Senior Substation Electrical Engineer

The Senior Substation Electrical Engineer leads substation projects, focusing on power systems protection, design, and project quality assurance while managing multiple team resources.
The Senior Substation Electrical Engineer is an integral resource to our Power Substation leadership (and supporting team) as you lead programs and a team of engineers on Milhouse projects. You will lead protective system designs, physical layout designs, and calculations, as well as coordinate with other disciplines on substation projects.
Your main responsibilities can include creating electrical protection & control and/or physical layout design deliverables for a range of Substation projects. Focus will be on the delivery of substation automation systems for our high voltage substation projects. Typical projects include working within multi-disciplinary teams to assist in developing efficient and reliable solutions for intricate substation projects. A key component of your role will be to act as the team’s quality lead on reviewing all design efforts to ensure it aligns with the client and Milhouse standards.
What you will do:
- Apply clients’ standards, guidelines, specifications, practices and procedures or appropriate industry standards in preparing design drawings as well as coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations comply with all specifications, codes, and client requirements.
- Deliver the assigned projects on time, within budget and meet agreed scope.
- Regularly communicate and coordinate project activities with internal team members and build relationships with clients
- The design and delivery of green and brown field high voltage electrical substation project.
- Support the development of P&C one line diagram, AC/DC schematics, control panel layout and wiring diagram, station service AC/DC distribution diagram, bill of material, cable schedule, etc.
- Lead all quality assurance efforts on behalf of the team
- Manage project subordinates and/or other project/discipline resources to quality, schedule, and budget requirements.
- Creating and enforcing project quality plan.
- Prepare proposals, contract amendments, change order documentation, and claim documentation.
- Ability to consistently work independently and present high quality of work.
- Lead project resource teams assigned to support projects.
- Maintain positive working relationships between the client and prime consultants.
- Provide documented scope, schedule, deliverables, and budgets.
- Provide progress reports, project milestones, scope changes, budget forecasting/analysis, and schedule updates to the team.
- Monitor cost accounting, invoicing, and closing out of projects.
- Ability to manage / lead several simultaneous projects.
- Work with team to ensure all required deliverables are prepared, submitted, and tracked.
- Coordinate with finance group to confirm invoicing and receiving payments on a timely basis.
- In charge of QA/QC on assigned projects.
- Provide project status information to the Managers and team.
- Assist management as directed.
- Ability to roll up sleeves and support project execution as needed
Who you are:
- Four-year bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited institution
- 13 - 20 years of protection & control / substation design engineering experience
- P.E. required
- Local utility agency experience preferred
- Project management experience preferred
- Distribution experience is a plus
- Proven ability to consistently produce high quality of work
- Ability to consistently work independently
- Advanced presentation, written, verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards
- Familiar with discipline specific design software and design management systems
- Familiar with Grounding Calculations
- Memberships and active participation in discipline specific professional organizations such as IEEE
- Experience with power system studies such as short circuit and coordination studies.
- Experience with preparing relay settings
- Familiarity with applicable IEEE / EIC codes and standards
- Understanding of CAD software
- Ability to estimate, plan, and schedule substation projects
- Ability to support proposal activities
- Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel as well as ACAD or MicroStation and Revit
