We are seeking a Sr. Underwriting Consultant to join our Life Underwriting team in a fully remote capacity. This role is designed for a highly experienced underwriter who can independently evaluate complex, high-face-amount cases while serving as a subject matter expert and mentor to others.
You will play a critical role in balancing risk assessment, customer experience, and distribution relationships, particularly within the independent/BGA marketplace.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite complex individual life insurance cases, including impaired risk, with face amounts typically above $5M and authority up to $10M
- Analyze medical, financial, and non-medical information to make sound, timely underwriting decisions
- Provide second signature support and guidance to junior underwriters
- Partner closely with internal sales and distribution teams to support business objectives
- Build and maintain strong relationships with independent agents, BGAs, and key distribution partners
- Manage a high-volume caseload while meeting service and quality standards
- Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders
- Contribute to team development through mentoring, training, and knowledge sharing
Qualifications
- Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 8 years of life insurance underwriting experience
- Proven ability to underwrite large and complex cases, including impaired risks
- Experience working within the independent agent / brokerage (BGA) distribution channel
- Demonstrated decision-making authority on higher face amounts and complex risk profiles Preferred Credentials
- Industry designations such as FALU, FLMI, CLU, or equivalent coursework
- Continued professional development aligned with underwriting expertise
