Compensation
The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is $134,100.00 to $223,500.00.

This role will join the Grainger Technology Group (GTG) in the department of Product Engineering. GTG builds powerful digital capabilities and advances technology-driven outcomes. It focuses on delivering compelling, value-added MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations) solutions by investing in three core areas: Team Member Tools, Information Assets, and Customer Experiences. These areas are built and improved through cycles of experimentation and innovation
An Engineering Manager in Product Engineering plays a critical leadership role in driving high-impact outcomes across the GTG organization. Engineering Managers partner closely with Product Management, UX, Data Science, and other cross-functional stakeholders to build and evolve platforms, applications, and services that power the Grainger customer and team member experience. These teams span a diverse range of problem domains, from search and navigation to personalization, product content, pricing, and beyond. You will:
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead one or more teams of Software Engineers, Data Engineers, or a mix of these. You'll be responsible for developing your team by fostering a culture of continuous improvement, effective communication, and strong execution and delivery. As a coach and mentor, you will focus on growing talent as you build high-performing, collaborative teams. You'll serve as a thought partner to Product and Business leaders, helping shape the technical direction of your area while creating an inclusive, empowered team environment. This role is ideal for leaders who are passionate about team development, coaching and communication, technical excellence, and making meaningful contributions to Grainger's evolving digital ecosystem.
Engineering Leadership
  • Team Leadership: Lead and coach software and data engineers to build a collaborative, high-performing engineering team. Your team will develop software using lean agile principles, embracing short feedback loops, continuous integration, and iterative delivery.
  • Champion Engineering Excellence: Foster a strong understanding of best practices, coding standards, and architectural principles within your team. Promote clarity around the technology stack by collaborating closely with architects and partner teams across upstream and downstream systems, enabling your team to confidently navigate both the current and future state of the ecosystem.
  • Engineering Effectiveness: Nurture a culture of continuous improvement. Identify and execute opportunities to enhance development processes, increase efficiency, and deliver high-quality and secure software.
  • Monitoring and Metrics: Implement and oversee a robust system for monitoring the health of your team's systems. Ensure performance aligns with expectations and benchmarks.

Ability to Deliver
  • Resource Planning and Allocation: Plan and allocate resources within engineering teams, considering skillsets, product requirements, and timelines to optimize productivity and delivery.
  • Risk Management: Identify and assess potential risks related to product development and implement strategies to mitigate these risks to ensure a smooth and reliable release cycle.

Influence and Communication
  • Feature Prioritization and Delivery: Collaborate with Product and Data Science partners to prioritize features effectively and drive clarity on scope, tasks, and timelines for delivery.
  • Cross-Team Alignment: Establish clear communication channels and ensure alignment between engineering teams, architecture, UX, data science, and product stakeholders.

You have:
  • 5+ years of relevant experience, including at least 3 years of engineering management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with analytics or data science teams in building or deploying data intensive applications.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related study or equivalent project-related experience. Master's degree preferred.
  • Ability to weigh multiple facets to make strong decisions in an enterprise environment with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Ability to use data to make decisions about the work and impact.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to conduct effective performance conversations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills ensure effective collaboration with team members, stakeholders, and vendors. Experience working with onshore/offshore contractors and managing vendors
